'62 wiper motor

is the wiper motor vacuum or electric i cant find any vacuum lines

its a 1962 rambler classic sorry forgot

AMc didn't use electric wipers until 64, then as an option. Vacs were still standard (at least on base models) through 1972.

The 62 Classic/Ambo is a tricky one! I'm looking at the TSM now. To remove the wiper motor:

1) remove the heater hoses and put a cork in the heater core tubes.
2) remove the heater/fan housing from under the hood.
3) there is a wiper motor access panel behind the heater. Before removing the panel MARK THE LOCATION so it can be installed in exactly the same place. If you don't the heater housing screw holes won't line up.
4) after all that take the linkage loose then the two screws holding the motor in come out. Take the top cover off and remove the control cable.
5) when reassembling check for operation before putting the cover and heater housing back on. You can loop one of the heater hoses around (take one off, connect the other in a loop to where the one you took off connects to the motor) so you can run the engine.
6) put it all back together and top off the radiator, I know you lost a little coolant!

If the wipers aren't working well you may as well contact www.amcrambler.com and send the motor in to be rebuilt. At that age a simple pull apart and grease isn't going to work for long. The booster on the fuel pump may be bad as well, but deal with one thing at a time. You can get universal cable drive electric wipers, but they will cost as much or a little more than rebuilding the vac motor and fuel pump. The vac wipers are strong and reliable when new, and the modern materials used for seals now will last a lot longer. A typical old vac motor would last about 20 years before starting to have problems, and many lasted a lot longer. at 40-50 years they just need replacing!

	You probably have a dual function fuel pump that boosts the engine vacuum to help stabilize the speed of the wiper motor as well as pumping fuel the carb. There are separate mechanisms in the pump each purpose. There will be a vacuum line leading from the intake manifold (or the plate on top of the manifold "trough") to the fuel pump. There will a line from the fuel pump through the firewall to the wiper motor, which I think is hidden behind the fiberglass plenum containing parts of the heating/ventilation system. Joe

	The wiper motor is behind the heater box on the engine firewall. You'll have to remove it to see what's going with it and the vacuum hose. It's not a difficult job.
