Hi again, Tom J here. I have a really important question and issue I need help with. I'm in the market for another '62 rambler and it has a push button transmission. To test the car to see if it would roll over so I could get it to fire, I brought along a battery and some gas to the sellers house. I put the battery in and hooked it up, lights came on, radio popped on, stuff worked. But when I turned the key and went to hit the start button, it didn't even work., Tried multiple times with no success. The engine is free because I can turn it over by hand. But when I hit the start button, nothing happens, not even a click. Any ideas? Thanks guys.

You could go back and short across the posts on the starter with a screwdriver after you re-install the battery. That should produce some noise if the starter is OK electrically. Joe

Make sure the PARK lever is "off" as well. I don't think it matters, but it might. You should be turning switch on and pushing the Neutral button on the shifter to start (should be marked "neutral/start" IIRC). I'm sure that's what you are doing. The relay/solenoid could be bad. I'd make sure it was in neutral then jump the starter as pacerman recommends. Just don't stand in front of the car, just in case....

There's a vacuum switch on top of the intake manifold to stop the starter from working when the engine is running. Sometimes these switches fail or can stick. Pull the wire off the vacuum switch, ground it, and see if the start button works. With the vacuum switch bypassed like this, be careful not to chew up the starter drive by pushing the neutral / start button all the way in with the engine running.
