I bought this '62 Classic S.W. with a 195.6 and auto tranny. The mtr had been removed so I thought I'd go ahead and replace the front and rear tranny seals and filter and pan gasket. I removed the 4 bolts holding the TT to the tranny. I lowered the tranny and pulled it forward and the drive shaft came with it about 4-6 inches. Will this drive shaft go back or will I have to disconect the TT from the rear end to reposition the drive shaft? I also need to replace the TT seal, where is the cheapest place to get one? Nashramblerrubber.com stocks TT seals but rather pricey(129.00). This car has 55k original miles. Do you think the tranny is reliable? This car has turned into a partial RESTO. I'm sure the $$$ is well spent. Not many of these '62 Classic Station Wagons running the roads. I keep telling myself that this is the last part I'm taking off but nooooooooooooooooo!!! Just one more.

You should be able to slide the shaft back in. You'll probably have to rotate the shaft a little for the splines to mesh. The seals are old and obsolete so finding cheap parts is probably not going to happen. Check www.ramblerparts.com or www.kennedyamerican.com . Also check American Parts Depot. I can't tell you about the reliability of the tranny. I do have two of them. One from my 62 Classic and one from my '73 Mail Jeep and both weren't good when I got them. I just know that they are expensive to have rebuilt if you can find parts. I'm not worried about my '62 Classic's original equipment anyway since I'll be installing a 4.0L and an open driveline one of this days.
