Got a new member here that has a 58 Rambler and had a problem with his trunion. Appears to have dropped down? Sorry I don't know a lot about these. Got a price of $400 for replacement, must be new or nos? Any ideas of what he is dealing with and is there any other options?
Curious to see IF I can help out. He's had the car to different garages for work (senior) and most places have screwed him up one way or another. Want to get him directed to a reliable friend of mine... THANKS for thoughts! Richard |

It depends on if that's a upper trunnion or lower, the lower is around $200. and if that $400. price is labor too, that's not surprizing with today's labor rates.
The upper trunnion is more. And more labor to do also.

The lower trunnion is the same on all pre 64 Americans and pre 62 big cars. Uppers are different. It really does depend on whether the problem is the upper or lower trunnion and just how bad it is. The lower has to be replaced if bad. The upper is replaced in the big car, but an American upper can usually be repaired, but it's not cheap if a machine shop does most of the work. If the trunnion cross pin seized the upper arms are probably shot also, but there is a fix for that. Requires welding, and a slightly longer pin. Let us know what trunnion is bad and how bad -- a couple photos would be nice, even is still on the car if it's the upper trunnion. |

Not sure, will check on the model.
Said something about a grease fitting? No need to go too deep yet, as not sure when I can get over and see where he wants to go. Mentioned about having taken it to MANY different shops for different work, and getting taken a LOT! The $400 was for the part alone, so not sure how realistic that is? I'll check it out and remember you for the parts... Richard |

If it's a 58-63 American upper trunnion and they were replacing with an NOS one, $400 is about right. It can generally be repaired though.

For the big car you can find the upper trunnion for 75-110 new or NOS. The NOS ones from the AMC supplers are about 110. You can get a new one from Rare parts for 75. The lower ones are about $125 from rare parts and $200 from AMC suppliers, If the control arms are shot good luck finding them. I cleared everyone out last year doing mine. The used arms I got from Galvins and APD were cracked or bent so skip the used ones and find some NOS ones.
Some notes to a first timer working with the lower trunnion design. Be sure to have the trunnion caps tack welded to the arms. Not fully welded just tacked,0 use the correct shocks and retain the lower shock spacer, torque the lower shock bolt to 125. |
