The site is well maintained so the search function works excellent once you get the hang of it:

Those are a prize that I have yet to encounter. If you can find an AX-15 that will bolt up and ask that question, one of two things happen here: The first from other people immediately questioning why you would put a truck transmission in a car(the point of this has merits outside the scope of their thoughts) and the second is usually an idiot-proof mechanical balance issue, like how you rebalance the engine with a neutral balance flywheel just to utilize an application specific transmission that will be permanent for that engine. I'm 100% sure you'll figure it out but without ideas on where to get that donor transmission, the buck stops fast.

How about a T5? Used in mid 80s CJs and lots of different options for shifter location depending on the tailshaft used. Later World Class versions shift pretty well and lots of different gear ratios available. I just installed an S197 Mustang T5 (2005-2010) into my Opel GT. The rebuilt transmission was only $625 shipped.

Doing an AX15 swap in a 67 American right now. The AX15 bolts up to the V8 via the 4.0 bellhousing.

Just a side note here. The AX-15 in the Jeep uses a hydraulic throw out bearing for the clutch. They all eventual leak meaning a new clutch disk and resurfaced fly wheel . At least that is the way they worked in my old Jeep Comanche pick up truck. If your looking for a cheap 5 speed , cheap is probably not the way to do it. Cheap always seems to come around and bite you back sooner rather then latter. LRDaum

I had a lot of weirdness with my T-5. After so much running around I decided it was best to just double space the clutch with washers to get an acceptable throwout. I don't know of anyone that has ever encountered this kind of problem but it's there.

While not cheap and probably overkill for a 304, you can go with a TKO500, TKO600, or Legend SS700 with GM input shafts and a Quicktime RM-8075 bellhousing. I have a SS700 behind a 390 for my SC/Rambler clone.
