I'm getting a EZ-TCU unit new in the box in a deal for a Holley Terminator EFI system in about a week or so when the guy gets back in town.  That said, I figured I might just look into an overdrive swap.  While I've always been enamored by the Gear Vendors stuff, I don't have the coin to go that route with my TF727.  I already have a Novak adapter for a GM automatic, so a 4L60/65/70/80E swap would be an interesting choice.  I've run a 2004R before in my Javelin and liked it, but electronic control and tuning seems like the way to go if I can.

The issue is I have no idea if I'll be able to fit a 4L60E in the tunnel, much less a 4L80E.  I'm also concerned about my headers.  Any ideas how tough this is going to be?

by your signature, you're wanting the 4l80e in the hornet?
going to be tight if it goes at all.
the 4l60's/65's are quite a bit smaller
how much hp do you plan to push through it?
some say the 4l80 is like the th400 and the 60 the th350.
i have an ls1 w/4l60e and 350hp at the wheels in my 71 xj6. holds up just fine

donno,  why not get a good used gearvender overdrive? Them 4L80E trannies are heavy and big. You will probably need to cut your tunnel on a small body car, even on big bodies as well.

If your happy with your trannies performance and functionality,  why make it more complicated. Just my 2 cents 9 plug nickels worth.

For what you're doing with it, a 4L60e will hold up fine with a shift kit and a couple of servos and it's a whole lot smaller. I couldn't get a 4L80 in my Javelin without modifying the tunnel which I didn't want to do due to the console in it but the 60 fit just fine.

for good info on the 4L80 trans I would visit the various camaro forums . lots of guys swapping ls1 engines and these trannys into first and second gen cars . most of the fitment issues arise with the cooler lines .

Podnuh, 'round these parts a used Gear Vendors OD is about as rare as a mint-condition Marmon Wasp.

Oh! I figured finding a dually or an extended crew cab, or a wrecked motor home may be an easy task.  Just throwing out options.

Personally here's what I think and know about overdrives. A 4L80 is complete overkill in physical size and power robbing for a 360. Sure it will work, but there are better options. THe 4L60E/ 700R4 that everyone has seemed to flock to in the last 25 years is a even poorer choice in my opinion. Have a deep 3.06 first gear and then dropping back to 1.62 for second is like driving an old 3-spd. It goes like heck in 1st and then nose dives in 2nd. You mentioned having used a 200R4 in the past. While a 200R4 does require a few hard parts upgrades it IMO is the  better choice due to physical size, excellent gear ratio spread, and lack of electronics. I would also look into using a Ford 4R75W if you must have an electronic 4-spd overdrive as another option. I have given serious thought to a 4R75W using a MSD TCM in my 80 Fairmont. In the end it all boils down to how much time and money you want to spend. Personally I would look really hard into using a 200R4 for it's physical size and excellent gear ratio spread.

Tom

I agree with most of what Tom says regarding the 4L80 . it's kinda overkill for a mild 360 .now behind a built 401 is another story . most of the power robbing comes from using a crappy converter . the stock one is complete junk for a performance application . also the electronics package to run one is expensive , but you can run a manual valve body in one . the 200r4 can work well { just ask the buick guys } but needs to be built right .

Around here, damn few people pay that extra $3 grand plus installation. If they were common, I'd already have a couple stashed in my garage.
