Greetings all,
Just an opinion question here....... I'm running a recent 4:56 gear install. Believe me,,,,,, It's fun as heck!!! Of course I have no highway ability as I'm still running a refreshed M11b with a 3k stall customed from Hughs converters. The only question I have is about my first gear. It really seems non existent. It uses it of course but it shifts to second while still under the launch. Maybe 10mph My question is swapping to a 3:54.... Will I lose that wicked launch that I currently have? Will this little difference raise my first gear shift point up to around the 20mph mark? It's a fair amount of work to do, so I don't want to be disappointed if I tune down my gearing. Thanks |

Simple(assuming the trans is otherwise healthy); Don't leave it in D and instead shift manually. The M11 and M12 can be held in 1st and 2nd with the console shifter until you manually shift to the next gear. Leaving it in D it will always shift conservatively/early, that is how they were calibrated for the AMC's, but it gives you the best of both worlds.
It will shift out of 2nd by itself even if you DON'T move the shifter, and will do so at approx 5800 RPM to protect from over revving.....but you can hold 1st as long as you want...(6000 RPM for example)... and it will stay in 1st until you move the shifter to 2nd. An auxiliary trans cooler mounted between the grill and radiator core support works wonders to keep these cool and healthy....the fan creates a low pressure area there and will pull air through the aux cooler and it will keep the trans fluid from getting hot. A MUST on an M11 especially with the gears and converter you have. Edited by 348AMX - Jun/03/2014 at 11:17am |

Of course your launch will be affected. Why not think about splitting the difference and going with a 3.90 gearset?

Thanks for the responses. I'll play around some more with manual shifting it and determine where it actually tops out at in first. I think if I can get it up near 20 mph than my second and third will be longer. Tranny cooler is needed though, you're right. I think that should be my first to do...

unless you are drag racing 4.56 gear may not be a good choice it depends on tire diameter also. your probably going to run out of rpm. If I were building a street/ strip car I would go with the 3.90 gear and your convertor would make a great combo.

Thanks, I have two right now and another carrier. I'd consider the 3:54 though. I'll PM you.

your wicked launch will be gone, have your trans man work on the shift governor to change shift point, or put a manual valve body in it. use a bigger diameter tire for street,

How much motor are you running stock or modified? you can run the numbers if your red line is 6,000 tire diameter 28 inches and 4.56 gears you can figure your trap speed ,et and rpm in high gear. I usually set my car up to hit the red line about the quarter mile stripe. if your running eight mile then the 4.56 may be good.
