Jeeps had altitude compensation, but I don't know when it started.

I gave one to somebody here on the forum a couple or three years ago. Was that you?

As long as we are documenting 4300 carbs I thought I'd post pics of a nicely restored 70 4300.   The carb is stamped DOFF  R  on the base .  The tag is not orginal to the carb but is correct for my car.  Note that the date code is R  9 J 19 which is correct for Sept 19 1969.  The J is substituted for Sept because the letter "I" was not used by Motocraft because of any possible confusion with the number 1.   That also means that later months Oct, Nov and December were K,L M

This is in no way a suggestion that my friend, Chuck, is not one of THE authorities on what is correct for our '70 AMXs!
Chuck was given a bum-steer when he bought this carb and had it restored. It is a beautiful, but not correct, '70 AMC 4300. It's a mixture of a Ford and AMC application. The bowl/top cover are from a Ford application...the 'altitude compensator' is the tip-off. Carbs for AMC engines did not have that feature. The DOFF R on the base is from an AMC application. It would appear to be a baseplate that's correct for a 4-speed car, rather than an automatic.
Since we've been exploring under the 'Restoration' category, what we think we can observe about these 4300 carbs, I'm just trying to keep the info accurate!

(Chuck: if you've got a 100% correct carb on your "after-Christmas" wish list, I think Joe has one. If not, talk to me!)

Just what I believe to be a correction here.
The device I believe you are referring to as an "altitude compensator " is actually a "hot idle compensator "

Altitude Compensators work off barometric pressure.

The "Hot Idle Compensator " shown here is a thermostatic switch that works off of heat. It opens to introduce more air into the intake charge at idle, when the carb temperature gets hot enough to start vaporizing the fuel in the bowl. That vapor then becomes part of the idle intake charge causing a rich condition. The additional air introduced through the HIC opening, helps to correct the rich condition.

As Paul states that style top was not used on AMC versions of the Autolite/Motorcraft 4300 carb..

The problem is that when someone today sees one of these carburetors, it's unlikely to be virgin unless an original owner can swear and remember 100% that no dealer nor other mechanic has done carburetor work on it, and that's not likely seeing as how humans simply don't normally have that ability (referring to legit psych classes I've taken over the years)

When you buy a remanufactured carb, especially these 4300s, here's what happens - the remanufacturer or rebuilder gets in large wire bins of the 4300s, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, AMC, etc. - they are all stripped down and put into other baskets and sent through the cleaning process.
On the other end, people pull parts out and make carburetors.
IF they are making one for, just for sake of example, a 1970 AMC application, they may end up putting a Ford body on the carburetor - and they fill the PCV port with a filler, epoxy and leave the nipple off. It will have the drilled hole, but will be plugged. Genuine AMC carburetors don't have that hole through at all, reman parts may have that hole filled since AMC used their spacer for the PCV port.
Same for the "air horn" - you will have a carburetor like Chuck has - the hot idle compensator.
Yeah, that was covered in college, and then likely was covered again in later classes I took as part of the company-covered continuing education the boss sent us to for GM, Ford, etc. - where they covered changes or bulletins and so on.
Rich has it nailed 100%.
It's also in the Ford books and other info I have from the Sun fuel systems certification schooling I went through.

Rich, I have a shelf full, well, DID have a shelf full, now it's more like a bench top, boxes, buckets, etc. of carburetors and parts, and have several 4300s, some are AMC, some are a mix, some are carburetors that were sold for use on AMC but are reman and I discovered were thus a mix of parts, right and wrong, correct and not so correct (such as plugged PCV ports................

BTW - Chuck's carburetor tag should be correct.   ;-)
I happen to know the source.

2 &1/2 years later I found this thread interesting so here I am with pictures of the 4300 I have. Can someone decode this tag for me? It does has the port on the bottom. It's currently mounted on a 1973 Javelin 304 with Eddy Performer intake.
