Just a minor update on the 4300 base codes.
A D0FF S coded carb would be D = the decade that the carb was built (C = 60's, D = 70's) 0 = the actual year of production (0 = 70, 1 = 71, etc, etc) F = This code indicates the Ford code for the car line. In this case, F is actually for "outside US' or "outside sales" F = This code is for the Ford engineering department responsible. F code is for the "engine accessories" department. The last letter(s) on the base code is for internal modifications. That letter(s) have nothing to do with make, model, engine, or trans. It's only a manufacturer's code to identify any internal modifications.. Edited by 71SC360 - Dec/11/2015 at 6:00am |

This would be a good thread to include good restoration sources (services) for these carbs.
Anyone?

Ram Air Rick (Rich Corsello) has restored quote a few of these carbs and did mine. He replicates all the factory finishes and has a few of his own modifications that he performs on his restorations. He's done several for members here, but is ready to offer his services to other members now that he has perfected his process. I will put his info in the vendor section as well.

Just like kirkwood, I had my 4300 for my '71 AMX done by Ram Air Rick (Rich Corsello). Not only does it look just as good as Kirkwood's, but it really works well too. Dan Jensen built the 401 for my car, and he was able to test the engine on the dyno with the restored carb on it. It peaked at 369 hp with the 4300 carb. Dan also had a chance to do some testing with the carb at the dragstrip with his 71 401/BW automatic, and ran a 12.78 with a best trap speed of 107 mph! Just goes to show that Ram Air Rick knows how to make these carbs work!!!
He has the AFB off of my '68 AMX now, and I know it will turn out just as nice, and work just as well. Ram Air has done a TON of work researching finishes and sourcing parts for these old carburetors. He's a great resource for all of us in the AMC hobby. On these carb baseplates the 2nd year is the model year code, not the build-date code.
So a '70 baseplate will read D0FF whether built in September '69 or February '70. The "0" is for the model year. |

Chuck was given a bum-steer when he bought this carb and had it restored. It is a beautiful, but not correct, '70 AMC 4300. It's a mixture of a Ford and AMC application. The bowl/top cover are from a Ford application...the 'altitude compensator' is the tip-off. Carbs for AMC engines did not have that feature. The DOFF R on the base is from an AMC application. It would appear to be a baseplate that's correct for a 4-speed car, rather than an automatic. Since we've been exploring under the 'Restoration' category, what we think we can observe about these 4300 carbs, I'm just trying to keep the info accurate! (Chuck: if you've got a 100% correct carb on your "after-Christmas" wish list, I think Joe has one. If not, talk to me!) |

I found out the hard way that the screw in the end of the choke shaft is left-hand thread. Sheared one off and had to find another.
