I have the 401 727 flexplate.  Can I expect any pitfalls or is this a direct swap?  I read a post awhile back where starter engagement was an issue.  Any thoughts?
Kind regards,
Steve

401 flexplate belongs on the 401, so use it.

And just use the motorcraft starter instead of the denso starter.

What did the 401 come out of? If it had a turbo 400 behind it the crank might have a thin spacer ring in it that needs to be removed to use a 727 converter behind it.

Stock 360 is in the vehicle for now.  The 401 had a flywheel.  Thank you for the responses.

Let me get this straight.  The 401 originally had a manual transmission behind it, correct.  The current 360 has a 727 automatic transmission.  You want to remove the 360 and bolt in the 401.
You'll have a very real situation of the harmonics of the engine being off.  The AMC engines are externally balance, the rotating assembly( harmonic balancer, crank, rod/piston combination, and the flywheel or flex plate) are balanced together as unit.
So, the 360 flex plate is balanced for the 360 rotating assembly.  The 360 and 401 flex plates weigh much less than a flywheel.  I would not just bolt on a flex plate instead of the flywheel and hope for the best.  It could end up an expensive problem down the road.
You would need to source, at the minimum a 401 /727 flexplate. IIRC, the last 401's were available in 78. You'd have to track down a 72 thru 78 727 401 flex plate.
If you aren't in a rush, I would collect some funds together and go through the engine. Get the rotating assembly balanced, new bearings and bearing. New gaskets and go.

So he says he HAS a 401 flexplate...in the very first post on the thread.

So NOW where's the problem?

Directly above my post is this quote from the original posting party. I'm only trying to clarify the info and assist. SO, I don't have any problem.

So he's wanting to install a 401.

And he has a 401 flexplate for a 727.

So where's the balance problem?
