The 74 401 Jav/AMX we are doing definitely has a 4 bolt dampener and bridged 502-2 heads but can't speak for prior years regarding the dampener as I have never restored a 72 or 73 and all the 401 engines that I have bought were 74 or later as well.

Yep, my mistake. I made a assumption and I was wrong. I will go back and fix my statement. I just looked at a untouched'72 401 and it has the 3 bolt damper. When you can buy a after market damper for $100.00, I wouldn't spend money on balancing a '71 damper unless you want it to look stock.

I interchange them all the time depending on what version of the car they are going into.  Just beware that the 401 4 bolt dampener needs the longer shaft water pump whereas the 3 bolt dampener used the shorter shaft water pump.  The dampeners may be interchangeable but the water pumps are not unless they the corresponding balancer and pulley setups that match the water pump shaft length.

Still trying to figure out my pulley mismatch situation.  Can someone tell me how and where to measure the water pump to see which one I have?  It's an aftermarket aluminum wp so it doesn't have a part number.

Thanks

Had a fun time matching them up as I never heard of any different ones. The balancer I had was bought some years ago as a spare from Mopar, AMC was gone by then, and the pulley came from a friend so I don't know it's origin. Was making all kinds of spacers and tossin' belts. If you're using parts from the same doner motor,  it should match up.

Does anyone know the depth on the different 4 bolt crank pulleys with two belts?  I know one is 3" and I'm thinking the other is 4 1/8" but I'm not sure.

Same question on the water pump pulleys - anyone know the different depths on the wp pulleys with two belt grooves?  I know there is a shallow one and a deeper one.  I have one that is about 2 3/8" deep, but don't know if it's shallow or deep.

Reason I'm asking - - I'm still monkeying with the pulleys for my 401.  It has a Professional Products SFI balancer, aluminum water pump, and the 4 bolt two row pulley that I have (321 6630) is the shorter one and it needs to be about 1" longer to line up.

Thanks

Scott

When the aluminum pumps first came out I put one on
my 70 390 and the belt was off by about 1/2-3/4".
What a pain!
