Anybody know if the 71 three bolt balancer for a 401 has the same balance as the newer ones(4 bolt)401 and anyone know the part# for a 401 balancer. Thanks J.G

I don't know the part numbers, but they are interchangeable.

I interchange them all the time depending on what version of the car they are going into. Just beware that the 401 4 bolt dampener needs the longer shaft water pump whereas the 3 bolt dampener used the shorter shaft water pump. The dampeners may be interchangeable but the water pumps are not unless they the corresponding balancer and pulley setups that match the water pump shaft length.

I found that there are two different offset four bolt balancers and two different offset four bolt pulleys. I don't know what years used which. Had a fun time matching them up as I never heard of any different ones. The balancer I had was bought some years ago as a spare from Mopar, AMC was gone by then, and the pulley came from a friend so I don't know it's origin. Was making all kinds of spacers and tossin' belts. If you're using parts from the same doner motor, it should match up.

I've only seen the early and late ones. Not saying there aren't more just saying I have not seen them.

Anyone have the part#s on the later pulleys (they are stamped on them) as I'm going to install a four bolt balancer on a 390 and need to update the pulleys.
Thanks,

1967 = 1st Year AMC Gen II Engine, (3) Bolt Dampener, Pulleys, Short Water Pump
1972 = Last year for (3) Bolt Dampener, Pulleys, Short Water Pump,1st year Torque Command
1973 = 1st Year (4) Bolt Dampener, Pulleys, Tall Water Pump
Does that sound right ?
With AMC V8's being used from 1973 all the way up to 1991
would imagine there being used more than only (1) Pulley offset arrangement.

I have sent a'71 Damper by mistake to be balanced to a latter crank and it didn't like it. My machinist called me and told me that it was way off. I took 2 more dampers in from the latter (4 bolt) 401's and one of them balanced ok.
'68-'69 390: #31916189 '70 390: #3196925 (same part number as a '70 360 but balanced differently) '71 401: #3211454 3-bolt(this is according to old information. I have one with no numbers at all on it) '7? 401: #3211454 4-bolt '73/4 401: #3216085 4-bolt Edited by SC397 - Dec/20/2010 at 8:25pm |
