im out of state right now and there are a couple 401 blocks I can get for $700 total.

They’ll be coming back to the SF Bay Area in the back of my truck if this is a good deal for Bay Area prices. I’d keep one as a spare and sell the other.

What do you guys think? Or should I pass or offer something else?

Good deal if they are good blocks.
But check: are they clean? Rusty?
Standard bore? Need boring? Bored before? (401's don't have a lot of room for overbore).
Are cylinders likely to need sleeves?
74 Hornet Hatchback X twins (since 1977)
62 American Convertible (still worth the $50 I spent in 1973!) AMCRC #513, AMO #384
70 AMX 360 4-speed (since 1981)

both blocks standard bore. One has already been cleaned and prepped. The other looks to be oiled heavily before it was put away.

Do they have main caps?  Replacement caps and line bores can get expensive.  If they do, probably a good deal.  401s haven't been produced since the late 70s.

One clean standard bore block is worth $700 in a retail number, so $700 for a pair would be an easy way for you to get a free block in the end. Go for it.

Do they both come with a crank? I've noticed the crankshafts have been getting quite expensive.
