BTW the flexplate stuff applies if you have a 904 now. If you have the BW tranny from a 70 or 71 car the flexplate and converter pilot are different. In that case it does not bolt up, you would have to convert to a torqueflite flexplate and converter pilot. Noticably more complicated.

I have a complete aod unit from a 95 Jeep 4.0 located near NYS Thruway a Exit 42. It is 4wd and I would like to sell it but you can borrow it to mock up a setup if you don't want to buy it. It worked fine last year when it came out because I wanted the engine.

Located usually near Rochester, NY and sometimes central FL.

My bad. Ken is correct. I was a Dodge tech and didn't work on many Jeeps. After I got to looking, I realized I was going to have to convert a Jeep trans to a hydraulic governor. Sorry about that.  Old age is catching up to me. Wacko

was looking at this other trans as an option tho.
did note that he said he recced 3:55 gears instead of 3:91

It will depend on the size of your tires to find the correct ratio that matches.

I converted my Comanche to auto from stick and with 33" tires, 3.73 ratio is too tall for heavy load hauling. 4.10 will make it match the speedo and power curve.

I'm going to try an AW4 mount from a '93 only Grand Cherokee. I recall it being similar to AMC car, but it's been awhile since I looked at it and since the landslide blocked our road I can't get there.

I have an AW4 from a 2001 2WD Cherokee 4.0. They make a TPS conversion/addition for Holley carbs. Then just use a factory TCM, they were a separate unit with their own harness. I might use it in a V-8 Hornet I'm looking at.

I'm going AW4/NP208 with the 304 in my '83 Honcho stepside project once the road is re-opened. I had a 4.0L flexplate rebalanced for it already. Originally I was going to put the 304 in my '68 Travelall with a 2wd AW4 I bought (since it has a remote tcase), but then I messed up my left hip and right shoulder, killing my driving stick anymore and decided to put my 290/TH400 in the Travelall instead.
Too bad 2wd AW4s aren't as popular out here in Seattle as no-one seems interested in mine for sale.

well,im a few pieces more ahead..maybe!!
meet the 1988 42rh a500 overdrive trans...from a dodge dakota.
im including pictures of the
mopar 904/1970 version
Amc 1976? 998? version
and the mopar 42rh version.
note the approx. Case Length to end of Spline shaft measurements.
amc= 30-31-ish
904 is 31-32ish,the rh is 37ish
RH specifics >> overdrive rib is approx 6 inches Wide at Top Rib
it has a 1/2 tapered Ridge/Spine going down the topside of its case.-front to back

i was hoping there was a way i can swap the 42rh into a Amc case??
maybe a trans case from a jeep grand cherokee?
of some year vintage??
its a pushbottun switch overdrive  hookup as well, instead of electronic, which might be a problem finding a case i can swap into...

below those pictures,is an idea i had when i looked under the front end of the dakota.
advise and tips are welcome :)

yeah..rack n pinion steering..
whats the odds this will work?
when we held it up there, the angles are all good, the rack actually has a straight shot to the spindles way better than the factory stuff does.
even the steering shaft angle was very close to perfect.
this would drop some weight off my front end,but would it be sturdy enough?

32RE trans bare case (999 off a '99 TJ 4.0L) I thought I had a shot of the back of the case but I don't see it. It's on my for sale pile. Swapping the 42RH internals to a 42RE from a Grand Cherokee should work. I also have a 2wd AW4 from an '89 Comanche I parted last summer. (I wonder what happened to the pic?)

okay,i nabbed another 727 out of a jeep today, would need the tailshaft converted to be of use in a car tho.
got the starter convertor and all bolts.vertor ring gear teeth good
also nabbed a 360 flywheel in great shape.ring gear teeth good
if that helps anyone else out.
i just nabbed them for trade or sale

honestly,im stuck here.
i have a great running cammed up 71 304,no idea what compression it is.
and a junker 77 360,needs rebuilt.
no matter which way i go in this whole transmission debacle i seem to need some sort of adaptor for the 71 crank.

am i just wasting time and should buy a motor trans combo from someone?
i just want to drive this car .....

Carnuck,what is this piece here?
is this all i need to install an amc 727 transmission?
http://www.bulltear.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=237&osCsid=q2fba15f74kk59qs361c77j4g5
i see it says requires crankshaft machining but can it be done the Other way?
like, machine that adaptor itself to fit the original id of the crank?

That is the machine only part. Nailhead TH400 with adapter ring like this one with the flexplate re-balanced for 304. That's what I'm doing for my 290. The correct 304 balanced part was also used in the Jeepsters till '73.

http://theamcforum.com/forum/topic60353_post543191.html

Everything you need for the swap with a nailhead and not AMC case TH400.
