Hello All,

Easy question about the motor mounts, and i cannot seem to find in the search.  What is the use of the rubber tabs on the stock replacements and do they face down towards the ground?

Thanks!

They face UP and away from the engine.  Those tabs are there so for a mechanical stop, or interlock,  if the rubber goes bad.

Just a novice here looking for help.  Looks like the parts manual shows them pointing UP?  Just eye-balling it, it doesn't look like it will affect the engine/cross-member alignment with it pointed up or down?  I bought the car as a non-runner and the metal overload bracket points up (I don't trust much of the work that the PO did).

We discussed this years ago and Ken Parkman? had an opinion on which way they should face.
Per AMC, the intended purpose was to keep the fan from destroying the radiator in minor accidents.

You've got me on this one.
A "minor accident" and the fan destroying the radiator due to a motor mount tab that sits at least  1' back from the rad.
I'll need some more info to wrap my head around this please.

The tabs are a mechanical limiter to keep the engine from torquing itself out of the engine bay.
A little smarter idea than my brother's old ford had.  He ended up with a nice upward dent in his hood due to a rubber motor mount breaking during a hole shot with his '71 LTD.  LOL! The Old Man was not amused.  My Bro learned how to change a motor mount by himself that day.

Thanks SC397, that makes sense.
I good have had a 66 Charger for $200 in 1972. All that was wrong was the hood dented because of a broken motor mount. If I only had the money!

BTW I have the dent in the hood, and the crushed header primary on the passenger side. Makes a helluva crash when the engine drops back down into place when you lift at the end of the track. Startles you big time.

At this point I've pulled apart engine mounts on the Hornet at the track, the stick street Rambler (that one bound on the steel scattershield and transmission tunnel and did not do any damage), and the 79 Cherokee rolling cars over in the wrecking yard using low range.

Yes the hook goes up!
