  After reading several posts on this topic, I chose to have my tach rebuilt with a movement that is compatible with non-factory distributors.  Especially when I learned that if the factory tach goes bad it will disable the car (the series wiring described above).  I used tachman.com and it cost about $225 with calibration.  There are others that can do this service.  
  Just another option for you....
