Saw it mentioned in another article while I was looking for something else... 727 pump in 904 trans. Seems I have heard of that, but can't find anything on it. Did find some modified pump bodies. Maybe it's a 998/999 front pump in a 904? can't find anything on that either... so maybe the modified pump body is the way to go? http://www.aandatrans.com/Products/904-Modified-Front-Pump-Support-(1978-Up)__12781L.aspx

I'm learning here guys, not trying to make things difficult!
The 727 is much bigger than the 904. The pump is huge compared to the 904. The 998 is very similar, and it uses alot of the same parts as the 904. Chrysler even used the 904 on their 360s. AMC always used 727s on their 360s. This is after 20+ years of working in transmission shops.

727 pump is totally different. The weak point of the converter is the slots the pump gear drives. The hub has a common problem with cracks from the corners of the slots. The 42rh- 42re and at least the 32rh have flats that drive the converter and do not have a problem with cracks. The pump body and gears is a direct swap, the gears are also thicker for more capacity. Some transmissions use drums with five clutches, some drums have as little as 3. I would also use the newer 2.72 low gear set if not already in the transmission.

The A500 which is a 904 with a bolt on overdrive section has the pump with flats on the torque converter rather than the 2 slits on the snout like is mentioned above. It requires no extra effort to use this style pump and any good transmission shop should already be aware of this upgrade. If you building a 904 for any kind of performance this would be the first place to start.

There is a pretty good 904 Trans magazine article on this page,
the link to images of the article is about the 9th one down from the top
and titled: June 1998 Car Craft, "904 versus The World"

First question, is the transmission you are going to use a 904, or a 998? Both were offered by AMC.

Transmission folks refer to all of the derivatives of the small TF 904 as "904's", although there are big differences between the 904, 998, and 999 that make one stronger than the next. Here's my understanding of the breakdown:

The 904 was targeted at 6-cyl cars, and has aluminum planetary gears and 2 or 3 front clutches.

The 998 was targeted at small V8 cars and has steel planetary gear, 4 front clutches, and two external reinforcing ribs on the rear servo housing.

The 999 was build for the Dodge 360 cars and added another front clutch and a wider front band.

I don't think the 999 version was ever used in AMC cars, but it's easy to make one from a 998 by adding the 360 Dodge version parts. With decent quality rebuild parts and a good shift kit the 999 will hold up fine behind a mildly beefed up 360, 390, or 401. I ran one for 10k miles in my 390 AMX and it worked great, I only pulled it out to swap to a T5.

998 was used behind 304s and sixes in Eagles. 999 was used behind the 4.0L in Wranglers. So you an get a case for an AMC V-8 from 72-79 2WD cars with 304, or convert Eagle 4x4 to 2WD with 904/998 parts. Same for the 999. I don't know of any 2WD 999 applications, maybe some Dodge trucks?

I had a 998 with a shift improver kit behind a 401 in my 73 Gremlin Pro rally car. 401 had a mild cam and torker 4 bbl manifold
