    Posted: Aug/07/2018 at 4:12pm
I just picked up a 360 for my cj5 that has a worn-out 304.
The engine is a runner and complete..... except NO flywheel.
It has a flanged crank, so 73 or newer?
Question is can I purchase a new flywheel and run it or do I need to add the damper or need to pull the whole thing down (don't want to) and have it re-balanced???
Thanks for all your help

Dont use the 304 dampner or flywheel. Get ones for a 360.

You will just need to buy a new flywheel for a 360...should work fine....If it was me I would also go with a new clutch cover and a new clutch disk....

Should be able to order one from a local parts store.....

I know better than to use the 304 stuff, but I'm wondering if just a new flywheel is all I need... without a tear down to balance.
And yes I'll be buying new clutch and pressure plate.
Thanks for you input.

I'd get the dampener too. As long as you get the right flywheel you're fine. I'd order from one of the AMC vendors. Omix-Ada makes one, but people have reported balance issues with the 360. I think they have a 304 flywheel, but it bolts to a 360 and the vendors have it listed wrong (listed for both engines, maybe all AMC V-8s). The late six flywheel bolts up, but you'd have to have it balanced to the 360. If you get one from an AMC vendor you should get the right part with no issues, might pay $20 more.

While replacing my clutch earlier this year, I picked up a Pioneer flywheel for a 360 from Summit...so far so good.  Think the PO used a 401 flywheel re-balanced for a 360...holes drilled everywhere.  PN for a 360 flywheel I found was 3192969, while 401 was 3197219 (stamped on my old one).  I had heard same about the Omix flywheels.

AMC Flanged Crank started with the 1972 Model Year Cars.
Agree with others, an aftermarket replacement Flywheel should be ok.
No need for engine dis-assembly and re-balance.
One watch out, very late like 1989 maybe, Chrysler changed the Starter and Flywheel.

I want to thank you guys for the info on my 360 flywheel.
Although the previous owner said he has the flywheel and just needs to find it, I'm not holding my breath.
If purchasing a NOS one with ring gear is all I need to do, then this maybe a doable project.

Thank you again for your input.
I'm sure I'll be along with more questions later.
