I have assembled the block on my 360 twice. Everytime I torque the main bearing caps, I can't turn the crankshaft with and 18" pipe wrench. The crank was machined .020 and the bearings are .020. I used assembly lube on all bearings and the cylinders and poured 50 wt oil into the rings. What's wrong?

Did you check that each bearing was .020, not just what was written on the boxes ?
It's happened to me . Did you check your clearances with plastigage ?

I didn't use Plastiguage but I checked the bearings. They were stamped .020. |

You need to plastigauge or use a michrometer to measure both the crank's journals and the main journals WITH the bearings installed and the caps torqued to spec, then do a little basic subtraction to get your clearance number. Never trust the sire stamped on the bearings and you should make sure your machinist turned the crank the amount claimed.

Bearings or crank is wrong. You should be able to spin the crank by hand with no issue after the mains are torqued.
I have had miss-boxed bearings before. There is never just one set got out after a quality issue. |

Old school procedure, assemble a bare crank in the mains, torque to full torque
then plastigauge and assure it's spinning freely. Careful not to amputate your finger(s)...... Next, do each rod on it's journal with no rings on the piston. Saves a lot of headache even if you have the proper measuring tools. No joke about the fingers, An old friend broke two doing just this, was lucky not to lose them. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try again. I can break loose the main bolts and the crank will turn with the rod bolts torqued.

I did that through the whole sequence the second time. The crank got progressively tighter and tighter as I went.

You do have the thrust bearing in #3, not #5 like a Chevy?
