I just picked up a '79 Spirit. It has a 304 and auto. Any ideas on what cam is the best? Simple 3 or 5 angle valve job? Does this motor like to rev? 4,88, 5.13 for the rear gear? I don't want a record setter, just something that can qualify in July and August and go rounds. This motor must be NHRA Stock Eliminator LEGAL. Thanks

yes a 2bbl.304s dont like to rev like some engines do. the 2bbl has to be for a 1979 304 /auto........I also have a 1979 304/auto AMX. The heads have to be 1979 too, everything on the engine has to be 1979.

And all has to be stock so you can't ask "what cam".
NHRA rule book for the class you want to run will tell you what you can & can not do.

I think GMAN ran a Machine in that class it is not all that easy from what I saw posted.
Take the rockers you may have to go thru 3 or 4 full sets to come up with 1 set that has the same raito across all of them.

Good luck and keep us posted on the project.

Get someone to do the valve job who really understands stock eliminator. With the rules the way they are now any valve job is legal, and the 304 head has a nasty edge and throat that a good stocker guy would solve, and the 304 head will flow absolutely amazing. Like really amazing. Like mind blowingly good for such a small valve.

The 2bbl is scary though. What is the current 304 factor?

A guy ran a 304 spirit in O I think a bunch of years ago and won a national event. the car was not fast, and did struggle  on a hot summer day, but the rules are a lot more open now.

actually, it (the cam) has to be stock lift, any duration/timing/etc and you can run roller rockers in stock aqs long as the ratio is correct for the engine

I ran K/SA back in the 70's. You can run a cam with a different ramp speed and duration. The carb I had the jets drilled out. Not very competitive in quarter but close in the eighth. I believe you can bore .30 but same compression.
