My son wants to convert his 304 auto to aT5. The way a 304 is balanced, how important is it (if at all) to have the motor/flywheel re-balanced after a correct flywheel is obtained? This leads to the next issue of finding a 304 flywheel, so any help there would be welcome.

I would find a shop that will match balance the found 304 flywheel to the current 304 flexplate. And you will need the flywheel to be correct for the year of your engine.

I never thought of that if they could match the flywheel balance to the flexplate that should work. Anybody have any ideas where to obtain a flywheel?

If you have not messed with the balance of the engine in the first place thus it now has original OEM balance, locating a new flywheel for a standard transmission that is correct for a 304 V8 should not require anything to rebalance the engine. It is a non issue.
But if you locate a flywheel for a 360 or some other displacement AMC V8 and purchase it, the thing can be rebalanced by machine shops that do those things to AMC 304 V8 specifications.
As to where one might be obtained, I would start with the auto supply shops including Rock Auto or aftermarket rebuilding shops or run a google search and see what comes up or even put a wanted request here on the forum. A flywheel from any 304 v8 should work for you.
Here is the first place on line where I would check

I agree with John. Unless you had the engine balanced by a machine shop when it was rebuilt, it will be ready to take a stock flywheel and still be in balance within factory specs if you get a 304 flywheel. Many have made the change from auto to stick and vice-versa this way over the years.

Be real careful here, I got the heck bomb-blasted out of me for posting a photo of a 79 304 flywheel that came from the factory on a 79 Spirit AMX with the SR4 four speed manual. The later and last versions of the 304 may actually have a six cylinder flywheel that was fitted and drilled for Detroit balance. I know someday someone else is going to come forward and say the same thing.
just sayin, Armand |

Did a few on line searches and all that comes up are 360 ones. Don't know why APD didn't show up. (Usually does in such cases). My son would like something cheaper, but at least we've got that option. Thanks! PS the engine is a 74 in case anyone's got one for sale.
