For the fun of it I took the 290 from my '69 Javelin project apart this winter to inspect it. It was rebuilt in 2001 but never run. It's a good thing too. The intake didn't have any RTV around the coolant ports (the gasket comes with a tube of RTV and instructions on how to use it).  The intake was modified to look more like a Machine intake at the carb mount. They gasket matched the heads & intake but it looks like the grinder got away from them a time or two. There are gouges on the mounting surface of the intake. The splash pan that mounts to the underside of the intake was also missing. Would have been pulling oil through the PCV valve. I cleaned up a spare intake and used it instead.

The cam was bigger than what I thought the little 290 would get along with so I replaced it with an Edelbrock Performer Plus cam and lifters.

The good news is the shortblock looks like it was done yesterday.

As it looked when I bought it.

Bottom end.

New 0.030" overpistons and clean cylinder walls.

New cam installed and engine reassembled.

Machine intake wannabee.
