Try using the ring gear to rotate the pinion.

I saw in a previous post you're using Prussian blue? That's really designed for higher pressure applications than gear marking (like checking bearing/race for wear). Use white or yellow gear marking grease and you'll get a clearer and more reliable reading.

I usually mark 3-4 teeth on the ring gear in 3 places around the ring gear, then turn the carrier a full turn. I have seen a couple of instances where run-out in the ring gear or carrier will affect the contact pattern, especially with old/used parts.

X2 you must set used gears to the same depth and backlash as when they were remove..Or failure will happen

Accordingto Randy's Ring and Pinion, used gears should be set for optimum pattern on the coast side.

bout 3min then roll. I'm trying that next.

I've always used gear marking compound thinned down with light oil applied conservatively then I roll (push) the ring gear against the preloaded pinion about 3 revolutions. Produced a well defined pattern.

This would be a red flag to me.  Something isn't right here.  As to setting up used gearing to new specs, I've only done it twice in my life and both times I had no problems with performance.  I mean really, if you buy a used ring and pinion how do you know what the previous setup was?

I am with Roger here....I have been watching this thread and have built dozens of AMC 20's with used AMC gears and never had a problem.  I have all the Kent Moore tools as shown in the TSM and NEVER had to but more then a .105 shim in the pinion.  Every rear has been quiet and never come back, I even did a hybrid of the two Types of carriers in 1965 that required a space of ,100 on the carrier to get proper measurements and that car has a lot of miles on it and will be at Gettysburg and has been to lots of other shows....all used parts, except new bearings and seals....owner just want a ratio change.
