The center carrier changes from 2.73 to lower numerical number.  The carrier from 2.87 to 5.00 are the same.

got it back together and just took blue die reading.
added .048  ratcheting noise gone now, turns much smother, pattern is
toward the outside of the ring gear, covers the outside 2/3 of the tooth.
going to add .032 more to the pinion and will post.
carrier set at .009 on the dial.

If the pattern is on the outside of the ring gear then your pinion is probably already too deep. I'd remove shims instead of adding more.

I've never needed .175" shims. I'd say average is .100"-.120". Last AMC20 I set up with Yukon gears was good at .105".

Did a set last weekend and the gears I took out had a .095 in the pinion and the new gears needed a .094.  Something is way wrong if you need .175 on the pinion.

ok tired of driving that damn race out, ordered a race today, turning mine down so I can slip fit and
try to get this shim stack right.
I tried it with stock .095 and it ratteled.
tried it with aprox .150 no rattle but patteren still to far to the outside.
trying .175ish after I get the race ready.
I know this sounds like a lot but pattern is getting better each time.
will post later hopefully.
thanks

If the contact pattern is high on the depth of the ring gear teeth (face contact) the pinion depth is too shallow, add pinion depth shims. If it's at the bottom of the ring gear teeth (flank contact) then remove shims. I have found it helpful to change only one setting at a time. Set your backlash at say .008 and return it there after you make a pinion depth change. Get the pinion depth correct first, then adjust your pattern toe-heel wise by adjusting backlash.

got it to .175ish , and it looks good(I think) I'm having a
hard time getting a reading on the pattern, ive wedged a
crow bar end between the ring and the case but it still is hard
to read, I need more resistance I think while turning the yoke.
last reading I had the backlash on .010.
ps the backlash setting tight or loose just moves the pattern
up or down on the teeth doesn't it, the pinion shim moves it
left ot right on the tooth???
thanks
