Howdy!
I just bought a '82 Cherokee 2-door with 258/turbo400 drive train. I would like to put a Clifford intake, Holley 390CFM 4bbl and header on it, but all of the headers for sale on the internet specify compatibility with CJ's only. I can find no header that will fit a full-size Jeep. Is there one available anywhere?

Have you looked at a set of CJ headers? They may work. Otherwise finding an old set on Ebay may be your only hope.

I have not been able to physically look at a CJ header. I only know that all the spec sheets where they are for sale say that they fit CJ's, without mention of the j10, Wagoneer or Cherokee FSJ. As the 2-Door Cherokee shares many drive-train elements with the CJ7, I would imagine the fit would be very close. My Cherokee 2-door runs a 258ci 6-cylinder and tH400 trans, with Selectrac.

I don't believe the non-fit has to do with the driveline components, it has to do with the frame dimensions and inadequate room in the Cherokee. If I'm wrong about that I'm sure someone here on the forum will correct me.

A 82 Cherokee is a full size Jeep, like a Wagoneer, but usually a 2dr. They didn't downsize the Cherokee until about 84, 85 or so.

I've got a 82 J-10, it's the same engine compartment as yours, about the only clearance issues I go see is front crossmember, which is way down there, and the differential drop .   Pretty much the same issues you have on a CJ.

Someone swapped a TH400 in there? It would be 727 or 999 stock.

I know the V8s were 727s but with a 258 it may be a T400. Never owned a Cherokee with a straight 6 but a lot V8s. What side is the front diff on? Pass or driver side?

My suggestion, buy a CJ header from a place that will let you return it if it don't fit. Or find a cheap used one. Should be plenty out there for sale. My guess is it will fit or be really close to fitting.

'79 was the last year for TH400 in the full size Jeeps. In '80 the 6 cyls came with 727 (pickups and Wagoneers) and optional 999 lockup (mostly Cherokees with 2.72 gears "econo" package)

The pumpkin is on the driver's side, which causes the tight space. There is a header that collect 3-into-2 then 2-into one. As I like a dual exhaust, the 3-into-2  short pips may clear the  pumpkin.
As for what the transmission is, I assumed it was a TH400, as that is what all the old ads I have been reading say. Whatever, it is a big son-of-a-gun, much bigger than the 5-speed I wish was in there.

There are quite a few CJ headers including some shorties

This one is weird, exhaust goes forward... maybe it'll work?

You could also put a 4.0L head on it... lots of short headers for those

In terms of 5 speeds... AX15s are cheap and good!
