Now here's a good question, should I just buy a new timing chain set or should I re-adjust the one that is in there now? Being that this is sight unseen

So, what are your compression readings?
Your chain will be really stretched so no trying to adjust it. If you could just buy a chain you might be alright. When I went looking there were so many manufacturers and P/N's I just bought a set. I must fess up that I also did rings and a used rocker shaft replacement. The rings however would not have improved performance because the chrome ones that came out were as new. |

Just did the compression test and the numbers were as follows:
1: 80 2: 85 3: 80 4: 90 5: 90 6: 85 Low I know, but they've only dropped 5 PSI from last year when I put the new intake and exhaust manifolds on

145 is perfect, new. 120-125 would be ok.
You're not even close, and wasn't the last time either. Plus you've got more than a 10% variance between cylinders. Squirt some oil in the cylinders and see if it increases much. If my lowest cylinder was like your highest, i'd be looking for another engine or a overhaul kit.

I agree with you completely, however it isn't in the cards yet...I'm trying to keep this motor alive for another 6 months or so...about the time I'll be finished with my 392 build and thus it will be a moot point to have an inline 6. I'm mainly just looking for ideas on how to keep it alive for a while longer and maybe be able to go 65 again

Try some lucas Oil Stabiliser. I've had some good results.

I've got some of that and some of the Restore...the stuff that comes in a silver can. It didn't give me any noticeable results...My oil pressure was already at 55 psi Edited by dbcooper1989 - Jun/11/2012 at 12:02am |

There's a lot of stuff on the Internet about feeding water down the carb at fast idle. I've never tried it but guess that it would either kill it or improve it.

I nused to do that a couple times a year. And i've done the same with Seafoam on later engines.
It's to break up carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, maybe even clean some of the crud off the exhaust valves, but I don't see it doing anthing to increase compression, unless some exhaust valves are so coated with carbon they're not sealing well. Doing it with Seafoam might clean the intake passages too. I've seen a about 10 psi increase on compression on my circle track car with Lucas, but just for a few races.

The water trick is to remove carbon. The cold water hits the hot carbon and the temp change breaks off the carbon. Might help if carbon was holding open the valves a little but I dont think it is going to help any but it is free so give it a try.
Would the Seafoam top end cleaner do any thing? For a few bucks can give that a try too.
