I am looking at a set of Mopar Magnum 500 rims with 225/60R14 tires on them. They are original rims from the sixties or seventies and the owner says they are 7 1/2 wide. Will there be any problems with tire clearance? And any clearance problems with the rims with the hub or factory disc brakes on a 1973 Hornet Sportabout?Tires on the car now are 195/75R14.How much will the tire difference throw off the speedometer? Thanks for the input.

Look at one of the tire sites, they have diameters of the different tire sizes. There may not be as much as you think between a 225/60 and a 195/75. If there is you can figure it out on a % basis between the two different diameters, or rolling circumference.

Mopar Magnums from the 60's and 70's are 14x6" wide. Should fit over discs no issues - will need spacers to run on drums. Just like the AMC ones, GM ones and small Ford ones. I believe Ford got a run of 15x7 Magnums made for when the '71 Mustang came out. Unless they've been custom widened, bank on 14x6.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, 225 section width is too wide for a 6" rim. For the extra perceived width, you're also inducing premature tire wear and upsetting the handling. Really, there is no benefit to running a wide tire on a narrow rim. I would suggest a 205/70/14 as not only is this size a virtual dead ringer for the old E70-14s, but they are the perfect width for a 6" rim and have a decent enough aspect ratio for both comfort and handling. If you want to run wider tires, I'd suggest different rims. 205/70's won't rub at all, and keeping all four boots the same size means you can rotate them and maximize your mileage out of them. |

Just to add to Fluffy73......Originally, Mopar Magnum 500's were 14 x 5 1/2 and 14 x 6.....Ford were 14 x 7 and 15 x 7 (15 x 7 Full Chrome Magnums were introduced on 1969 Boss Mustang). Ford and Mopar placed there stamp on the wheel rim, Ford used the Oval Logo and Mopar used the Pentastar...they are hard to see a lot of the time unless you are media blasting them. AMC Factory Installed 14 x 6 Magnums with both E70 and F70-14 tires, which are same as 205/70 and 215/70. I have been running 215/70-14 for the last 25+ years with no issues. A nice combination is 14 x 6 on front and 14 x 7 on rear, that way you can have the next size up on rear with proper contact area. Most likely the guy selling these calling them 7 1/2" , is mistaken and they are 7" wide. Now up to today many Magnums have been either re-rimed or made wider. I know a guy that has 15 x 10's on his tubbed Mustang.
One more thing...not all 14 x 6 Full Chrome Magnums are the same, a special run of "reverse offset" wheels were made for 1966 Shelby's, they have a very flat area on the face side. Motor Wheel, literally just swapped the rim 180 degrees. Edited by 401MATCOUPE - Jul/22/2016 at 4:45am |

I have a set of Mopar Magnums on one of my AMX's that has later model Hornet front disc brakes (not sure of the year, possibly 78). The hub nose diameter prevented the Magnums from going on easily. And after they were on and bolted down once, a problem to remove the rims from the front hubs! A little work on the OD of the hubs with a disc grinder gave me enough clearance to fit the Mopar wheels without binding. I wasn't too worried about a balance problem since the amount removed was comparatively small and near the center of the hub.

At 14 inches clearance over the disc calipers is a maybe. Depends on the manufacture of the rim. Some of the "Magnum 500" rims had slightly different hoop profiles depending on the manufacturer. You would have to do a test fit to be 100% sure.
As far as the tire size the 225 should be no problem in the rear but there is a chance you might see some fender rub in the front. With tire size 205/50ZR17 on the front of my 73 two door the tires have just a fraction of an inch to spare. I am using 7 inch rims both front and rear. As far as the speedometer with the 225 tires when your speedometer shows 60 MPH you will be really doing 57.9 MPH. Not much of a change. Edited by pit crew - Jul/24/2016 at 3:27pm |
