I spent quite a bit of time researching the 2004R  as an option to fit to AMC V8.
The link below has a good review in the forums I read.
One advantage is that you can order it with an AMC  JW Ultrabell.
Flex plate and converter to suit also available.

I have a 700r4 in my AMX. Like the OD but first gear is too steep, too much of a drop to second, I think the 200r4 is a better option. Had an Art Carr 200 in another car it was great. If I ever have enough money for a new tranny that's the way I would go

I believe the 700R4 is a common issue transmission behind the AMC V8 WITH AN ADAPTER from the factory on most late 70's Jeeps. Still haven't found any in the yards but there's quite a few people on Facebook selling drivetrains like that and they claim it's factory. Ermm

Nope.

700R4 didn't exist in the 1970's, at least not in PRODUCTION vehicles of ANY manufacturer.

I had a 77 360 Jeep Wagoneer and it had the adapter to a TH400.

I don't remember if it was Chev or BOP.

The only posts I see that bother to mention it say it's BOP. The AMC V8 is already a huge anachronism along with the weird combinations it had through the 70's so I have no idea what's going on with that 700R4 combo. Do people seriously favor this thing?

After I was corrected, the proper case is 65 to 66 Buick Nail head, without the switch pitch parts.

Back in the 80s th400r4 was the go to for street performance cars. You didn't need to drop in a 3.55 rear gear, but if you had one, it did not hurt.

To me is a matter of availability and cost. You can rebuild either for your use, and be dependable.

One will have a lesser low gear over the other, but it's not that much of an issue, until you get down to gearing and shift points.

Two companies make adopter for the 700R4/200R4 transmission to AMC conversion. Advanced adopters and Novak. Of the two Novak has a research site and a more complete kit as they include a new flex plate. The Novak kit is the better one in my opinion. You no going to be able to go to a junk yard AND find parts for this conversion. It all $$$$. LRDaum
