APD has the handle gaskets for $8.00/pair.
I got the radiator from O'Reilly's for $226.99. It was Murray Heat Transfer Radiator #433579. This is the one they list for a 304 V-8 in the '79 Spirit. It was an exact replacement. Be careful of any Spectra Premium radiators #CU579 that are listed as three row. They do not exist. I bought and returned three even though the manufacturers catalogs say they are three row. Note that the last three digits in both part numbers are the same. This is the number that was used by Modine for this application when Modine was still in business. Hatch lift support springs (technical name for hatch supports) #5940354, $17.09 each, at Advance Auto. Beats using that broom stick! Later! Mr. Ed Edited by Mr. Ed - Oct/16/2014 at 4:50pm |

All old cars take a lot of work to get going again, even those that have been babied and taken care of. One that's been just used for transportation with spotty maintenance as it got older takes more. Fixing all the smog stuff on an 80s car can be daunting, but so can removing it all. The engines run better with it all working than removed. If you remove it, it may run okay with the carb and distributor you have, but it would be best to go back to a pre-smog (early 70s) carb and distributor. Then some re-wiring will be needed also. It's not too hard, but can be time consuming and cost a bit to find the parts. Old AMCs were usually the first to go to the scrapper in salvage yards because not many parts were sold.
If you're trying to use this as your only car, you may be better off to sell it and get something newer. It can be rewarding to drive something different that you fixed yourself, but you have to have time and patience to do it. Take some photos and tell us in as much detail as you can what you've done so far, and the results. Sounds like you don't have one big problem, but a lot of small ones. Those can be the most frustrating to identify and fix. Troubleshooting is the hardest part -- fixing is usually easy once you figure out exactly what needs to be fixed. |

thanks for the help, currently the exhaust is completely cut off to what looks like a spark arrestor? so the air injection is gone along with the cat, theres various hoses plugged off, i have an account to prodemand.com which tells me that the ones plugged are just vents and not vaccum so im not sure if that makes a difference,
also i have the steering column taken apart trying to get to the ignition switch but its under the shifter bowl and i dont know how to take that off without messing it up theres also a plug on the back of the carb that goes into a mechanism that has two needles attached to it and the car wouldnt even try to start if its plugged in so i just leave it out and the emission canister has a hose missing to it, ill try to figure out how to upload pictures and show you

I think you can upload directly to here with 20 points... see the sticky on how to upload pics. You may need to upload to something like Photobucket and post the links here.
