I looked at an hornet body style AMX today. From what I'm reading the AMX option for the hornet was only offered in 1977.Did all V8 hornet body style AMX's have a  model 20 rearend?

Yes all V8 small body cars used the 20. BTW I have a model 20 I pulled out of a 77 AMX and it has the heavy duty brake option meaning it has 2 1/2" wide pads. Havent ever seen another one with that option

Yes, only in 1977 because in 1978 the Hornet became the Concord. The AMX option carried over into 1978 as the Concord AMX and again into 1979 and 1980 and teh Spirit AMX. The AMX designation  went away after the 1980 model year.

If memory serves me, the six cylinder engine got the model 15 rear.

The AMX as an option to the Hornet was as stated a 77 only offering. As I understand AMC's some what different model designating, the 78 AMX was badged as an AMX not a Concord with an Option, the same for the 79 and 80. The rear end on the 80 though is interesting, or at least the one in the driveway anyway, it is model 15 as offered with all I-6's which was the only engine offering for 1980 but the rear brakes are those used on the Model 20 rear axle.
