There are two sensors for the egr valve called a low and high temperature vacuum signal modualtors. I just got a pair of used ones and they were very hard to locate. I noticed they have a metal mesh screen on the back of them.  I want to clean them out but I do not want to damaged them in anyway. I do not really know what is inside or how they work.

I was thinking of using gum cutter and some compressed air (lightly) but I am not sure if that is such a good idea.

I was thinking soapy water may be less likely to damage anything.

Does anybody know how these things work, what is inside and why there is a mesh screen on the back? And if they should be cleaned out in some way?

thanks,
dm

There's a free online 1973 TSM here:

In section 4 it talks about the Vacuum Signal Modulators, it reads like they're
a themostatically controlled vacuum "leak" making the screens an inlet air filter.
Wonder if they have an internal bimetalic opening element or what.....

Difficult to say not knowing what they have internaly.  Are they Sintered Bronze or just Screen ?
Brake Cleaner cuts about anything and cleans well, but could be "harsh".
Agree just good ol' hand soap and water or Dawn dish soap works pretty well with a toothbrush
and is pretty safe to use, then blow out with compressed air.

I put a magnet to it and it seems to be some type of steel  mesh screen.

Found this old post here I started in 2012. It feels like it was not that long ago.
Anyway you were right about the sensors having a "internal bimetalic opening element " It was safe to clean them out with gum cutter.
