Just purchased a 1973 Javelin - do not think it is the AMX version, has a 304 with spd manual. Have read a bit about other engines and trans that come with differenct Javelins, like this one because of solid, straight body, great interior. Will mess with it for a long time before changing but wondering if 360 or bigger would be a good engine swap for it - would it be a lot more power for the cost and effort, or is it better to modify the 304 which is all stock at this point.
Thanks,
Charles - Hill Country near Austin Texas |

The 360 is a big improvement over a 304. In 1970, a 4 barrel 360 was rated 290 horsepower gross. The 2 barrel 304 was rated 210 horsepower. Add the 4 barrel and dual exhaust to the 304, and you might pick up 20-25 horsepower.
When the ratings changed to net horsepower in 1972, the difference was between 220 and 150 hp. |

a mild 360 will out run a 304. but if the 304 runs well, and you are happy with it, you could leave it in. BUT if you change to a 360 or 401, you must get the correct flywheel. a 304 flywheel will NOT work with a 360.

How much HP does it take to go 9/10 faster in the 1/4 mile?
That's how much faster I went with just slapping a 4bbl on a stock 304. |

A 360 is just a nice engine all of the way around. Despite the family interchangeability between a 360 and the other engines, no matter pretty much what you do one of them, doing it to a 360 gives you a bigger bang for the buck and a lot more available parts are there as it was used for such a long period of time.

Thanks for the welcome and some great initial suggestions! Any tips are appreciated, adding 4 barrel and dual makes great sense, then if I swap to a 360 down the road, I believe that the new Carb and exhaust would stay with it - If I get a new Edelbrock Intake to accomadate the new 4 barrel, not sure if that would also go on the 360. (great tip on change of flywheel).
I remember in high school days my chevelle with a 3 spd manual had just a 283 but it was plenty of power - It seemed like it had been geared special or maybe it was the 3 spd but you really felt the quickness and power in first 2 gears.
It will be great when my 73 Javelin gets here, I expect the same quick power at low gears, but adding 4 barrel and dual exhaust would be a fun first improvement to work on and it sounds like it would make a difference I could feel and certainly hear. What would be a good suggestion for a dual exhaust set up if I went with addtion of a 4 barrel to the 304 - headers to glass packs to resinators -small regular mufflers after the glass packs maybe? - would be going for best sound but not obnoxious and of course best for performance - thanks - it's great reading your comments!
