I just purchased a CJ5 with a rebuilt 304 with a mild cam. It currently has a Holley 750 carburetor. I believe this carb is to big and I am looking for recommendations for what carb to go with. Thanks...

If you're looking at a Holley, I'd say a 570 Avenger.
Carter, I'd say a 600 Performer or Thunder |

Yeah that 750 is WAY to big! Poormans MACHINE has it right dont go with larger than a 600 cfm carb. I'll recomend staying with the Edelbrock carb. Easy to tune and pretty much bulletproof. They work really well on Jeeps. |

Can anyone advise if the 73 CJ5 came factory with front disc or drum brakes. Mine currently has front disc by Bendix but not sure if they are factory. The previous owner put aftermarket SSBC rear disc brakes and I am having a difficult time matching the right master cylinder. thanks...Hank

I wouldnt say its too big it all depends on the primary jets and how much spark you have for when the secondaries open. I know plent of guys running 750cfm carbs on 304 engines in jeep with rv cams but they have to be jetted right. Does it run like a raped ape now? To my knowledge 73 was a transitional year for drum to disk front for 5's.

Disc brakes weren't available from the factory until 76 or 77. 76-79 discs were a bolt in on the 73 axle, just used everything from the spindle out. 80 up brakes bolted on, but had to use the knuckle too. 76-79 discs used a 1 1/8" thick rotor and the caliper bracket attached with the spindle bolts, 80-up was a 7/8" rotor with the caliper bracket bolted to the knuckle.
My 77 CJ7 has factory front discs, and I added TSM rear discs using the factory master cylinder, and it works very well. Bob tufcj Edited by tufcj - Apr/08/2009 at 9:30am |
