On Sep 29 2017 I picked up this 1972 Matador as a project. It's obviously rough, but thanks to leftovers from a parts car I had years ago, I already have most of what it needs. Both doors, windshield, and rear glass among other things.

For nine out of ten people, this probably would have been a parts car. Fortunately, I'm that other one out of ten. These aren't becoming any easier to find with the passage of time. This is the fourth 71-73 Matador hardtop I've owned.

I traveled seven hours each way to get it, but the price was right. I don't know exactly when I'll get started on it, but hope to soon.

I admire your dedication!  My 77 wagon wasn't quite this rough, but I'm like you, and look at it as a project.  Good luck!  These are beautifully proportioned cars.

Good on you for taking it on. My friends often scoff at the condition of cars I consider salvageable. That's usually when I whip out a copy of the British car mag Practical Classics and show them an example of what some of our British cousins deal with.... Literally, starting off with a few bits of trim and a frame, hopefully, and ending up with a show winner.... and that, being done in a nanny state!

Hi El Matador! My name is Matt. Greetings from Kenosha WI! I love this blue 72 AMC Matador! What color does AMC call it? What motor and transmission does it have? It's good that you have all of the spare parts that you need for it!
I have a brown 79 AMC Pacer Limited Hatchback! 258 auto. Alpaca Brown with a Tan Interior!
Have fun with your AMC's El Matador, -Matt.

This color is Admiral Blue Metallic (paint code C5). Interior is blue. It has a 304 and a three speed column shift automatic. If I didn't already have the majority of parts it requires, I don't know if I would have taken it on as a project.

Fortunately it doesn't have a vinyl roof and any of the associated rust problems. I'm not sure whether I'll go with an almost completely stock restoration or incorporate some subtle modifications (such as Magnum style rally wheels) here or there. Sadly it has drum brakes in front, so those will be upgraded to discs no matter what.

Before anyone asks, no, there is no 401 in this car's future.
