Surprisingly enough, the 80 AMX also has something that could be described as a torque linc also. And of course that WAS a 6 cylinder car.

Didn't the V-8 Gremlins only come with ONE torque arm on the right (passenger) side? I mean from the factory, don't recall if the left side was optional or not, or did they come with both factory installed like the AMX?

Both sides. like the AMX.    (I have them on my 1972 Gremlin which is a V8 car)

The 79/80 AMX has a rear sway bar that mounts to the frame in a similar location, but I wouldn't call it similar to a torque link in form or function.

They bolt solid. There is a procedure to adjust them. I believe the early cars only had a hole no slot.

Take another look at the photos.  Also if you look at a copy of the TSM for 72 (Manual) it will show how they have ONE bolt to the frame.  This allows "travel" of the axle, up and down.  As noted, you have to go thru the adjustment process on these so that they work correctly.

At the axle, it has another bolt that adjusts the torque link. ....you have to go thru the adjustment process on these so that they work correctly.

The older, 1968-70 design is close, but NOT the same as 1972 for the V8 Gremlin, only.

Can you install both designs on a Gremlin?  Sure, and I bet some dealers and owners did and do.  That being said:  According to the TSM, the 68-70 design was never installed at the factory as a factory option on a Gremlin.

In the 72 V8 Gremlins, using the bracket INSIDE the frame, NOT using (3 or 4) bolts to a bracket that the link connected to, as on the earlier design, 68-70.  The "H" shaped bracket was put inside the frame before the back floor was welded in place. This bracket supported the frame when the bolt was tightened for the link.  An original V8 72 Gremlin will have the hole in the frame just infront of the rear wheel.

AMC did alot of things that most of car companies didn't do.  Sooooo, is it POSSIBLE that someone found an old 68-70 torque link in the factory... and thought it was a good idea to put one on a 72 V8 Gremlin instead of using the newer "more simply" design?  Anything is possible.  Just because I've never seen the old torque link design factory installed "original" in my 35+ years of looking at 72 V8 Gremlins, doesn't mean someone else hasn't.
