Hey guys. I recently just bought a 1971 Jeep j4000 pickup and I was wondering how to take the transmission out to check the clutch. My dad says the engine is a AMC 350 but my friends tell me it has a 360. any tips and any help?

AMC didn't make a 350... so it would be an AMC 360 or a Buick 350. AMC bought Jeep in 1970 and was still transitioning in 71, so it could be either. They used up the stock of Buick 350s before switching over to the AMC 360 late in 71.

In either case the trans comes out the bottom. With a transfer case it's a bit tough to handle. Pull the four bolts holding the trans to bell then slide it back. You will have to take the bell off to change the clutch but it's easier to take the trans off without the bell. When reassembling do the same, but use a clutch alignment tool to get the clutch disc centered before putting the bell back on. Hope you have a trans jack, as the trans with t-case is awkward! If you don't you might want to take t-case off the back of the trans first. A bit more work, but makes the trans a LOT easier to handle and you're less likely to drop anything or get hurt. Sometimes it's just worth doing a bit of extra work to make things easier, even if it does take a little longer.

If you don't have a good transmission jack,
or a saddle for a conventional jack,
if the shifter opening in the floor is big enough,
sometimes an engine crane can be slid into an open side door, and a chain or strap can be dropped through the shifter  hole and used to support/raise and lower the transmission.

You'd have to watch the center of gravity of the transmission when doing that,
wouldn't want it to tip too far forward or backward when sliding off the back of the engine.

^its better than a transmission jack sometimes,
and it can be worse depending on the vehicle.

That said you usually judge a clutch by how and where it engages,
and a slipping clutch could be caused by a leaking rear main seal.
Also a misadjusted or damaged clutch linkage can make a decent clutch act up too.

Last point,
like Frank said,
pulling the transfer case first before dropping the transmission seems like more work,
but it can save a lot of aggrevation.

If your truck is like my later J-10,   it's got a bigger than 12x12 plate bolted above the transmission,  under your carpet.   When that's removed you've got lots of ways to support, or lower the transmission from above.

Early 1971 uses the Buick 350. Late 1971 uses the AMC 360. It was a transition year.

The AMC 360 is a better engine.

There is a transmission access plate on the floor pan of the transmission tunnel. It bolts in place but you need to remove the carpet or rubber floor mat to get to it.
