I know a guy with a similar situation and he wet sanded it with 1200 and then buffed it out. It looks amazing now. I got to see in Iowa at the Goodguys show. His is white with 51k original miles on it. I'll try to post a picture of it later.

If you want to spend some time reading about reviving old paint:

I think it is best with old paint to try the gentlest solution first, then get more agressive in steps if you don't like the earlier results. Start with a good cleaner wax then progress up from there through rubbing compound (hand applied), buffing with a gentle compound and finally "color sanding and buffing. There are gauges you can get to see how much paint (thickness) is left on the car too. I think they are the province of the pros but you might be able to find one. Joe

Thanks for all the info and advice, guys. It's a lot of help. I can't afford to do a proper restoration and paint job at this time, but I would like the paint to shine a little. Here's a photo of the stripe removed. you may be able to see the original shine between the red line. The red pin stripe is all that is left of the original stripe.

Moving on with removing more parts from the car.
Here's the front end before some clean up. |

And here it is with the rust proofing removed.
I guess the best thing to do to protect the paint at this point is to use some clear spray paint. |

The black paint you removed is not rust proofing, that was factory applied black paint so the lighter color did not show thru the grille

Thanks, that makes sense. I'll spray paint the black again. I also heard that the hood latch support was also painted black on the light colored cars and body color on the dark colored cars.
