Recently purchased a 71’ mustard yellow 360/4spd AMX project. It’s a running driving project(sort of,lol) that I’m going to get back to road worthy. Has the center console 4spd, ram air air cleaner, original 15x7 rally wheels, rim blow steering wheel, and tilt column. Build date is 01/71, and I even got the dealer info with the original owners info in it!

Got the brakes working properly(plunger rod was to long) and adjusted the strut rods so the tires don’t hit the fenders anymore. It’s going to need shocks for sure, and I’m going to put new leafs, and front coils in as well. Oh, and a carb rebuild and timing adjustment.

Very interesting... I wonder if your console goes under the center pod, as it seems your door panels are later model versions. If the console goes under the center pod... then being a late run on the early production 71, the door panels were the 1st to be changed over. Making it clear that not all late on the early 71 model run Javelins, had all the early items.
To make sure about the door panels... on later panels, both driver and passenger panels have pockets behind the door release handle. Early panels dont. Looks like outside of no rear windows defroster, non a/c and tinted windows, you have a nice well optioned AMX. |

The console does go under the weather eye controls, and there are no pockets on the door panels. The only thing I think was swapped out on the interior was the dash pad because they glued the correct VIN tag over the existing one in the new dash pad. Guess they couldn’t figure out how to drill a rivet out and put a new one in?? Lol. The real mystery here is the engine. It’s painted red, has not cui cast in the block and the casting number(3198951) says it’s a 71-78 401??? Edited by amx73 - May/08/2019 at 6:28am |

Ah, so what looked to be door handle pockets was probably flash shadow. The interior does have a lot of heavy contrast with black and bright highlights.
Some one stated its IH red... oddly enough. There is more than enough under the hood details to keep you busy, which makes the engine paint a bit more owner modified than factory. I have no casting information on hand, but will post an engine casting link for refernence. Not sure but this IH red paint issue is not new to me, as i vaguely remember an older thread on something similar with service blocks. Just been years now, and the forum I may have heard it from is gone, so i am unable to verify. I searched our definitive engine casting numbers list... couldnt find it. Had enough time to find many threads with your engine block number, seems many service blocks are with that number. Even that service block can be packaged to be a 70 390 replacement as a crate engine. So, it happens to be a broadly used part number for service blocks. Edited by 304-dude - May/08/2019 at 7:14am |

Jake - Car's coming a long nicely. Hopefully you'll get it all sorted out soon, then the only problem will be waiting for some decent weather to take it out. Though lately that's been a problem... Steve

Hey Steve, thanks. It’s been getting worked on in half hour increments! Lol! The weather has been crappy but, that’s ok by me. Gives me more time to get her ready to cruise! Jake

A 71 360 4speed Javelin/AMX in Mustard is a GREAT car to build! Does the side of the block say 401? It could be a service block and still a 360, or a swapped in 401. Are those seats leather? Nice nice car you have there either way
