    Posted: Jun/01/2020 at 5:11pm
Hello.
I ended up painting a 1970 javelin front clip and in the process i removed the two nuts and wahsers for the wiper shafts so i could blend color into the cowl cleanly and im having a hard time lining up the flat spots on the shafts so i can pit the washers and the shaft nuts back on so i can ultimately insatll the wipers and be done with that.
Would it be easier to take the wiper motor out completely so i can stick the wiper linkage thru the holes on the cowl and then re install the motor?

I found it hard to install the linkage in the past because the pivots want to flop about. What I did was feed some fine gauge solid wire from the pivot mounting holes, through the cowl and attach it to the pivots. Then I simply pull on the wire to draw the pivots up through the mounting holes.

I used AWG26 solid partly because I had a good supply of it, but it's fine enough to wrap around the pivot and not interfere in the mounting hole. Using sulid wire means it's stiff enough to feed through the cowl without bunching up.

In your case,  the wiper motor is installed. Maybe you could use the wire to hook a loop around the knurled post and draw it through the hole. Once the post is through, you can spin it by hand to align the flat.

And slip the cowl/wiper washer/nut on the wire so you don't need to set everything aside to go find where you left it!!  Experience is cruel.

If you want to remove the motor mtg plate from the firewall, ok; but otherwise you will regret unclipping the wiper motor from the linkage. That clip is a major PITA to get back on with the linkage installed.

edit- especially if the engine is in the car!

Agreed. Those clips are magical, and quantum rules of reality state that they enter a parallel universe, from which they never return. I am certain that is what happened to all of mine.

Agreed - don't disconnect the wiper motor.
And if you do - the worst position for reconnecting is with the motor in park position.

I have a roll of stainless "safety wire" I use for a lot of things like putting those shafts back in place.

I guess no one reads the rules..... or bothers to check or ask.
The reason you can't post photos is that there are morons called forum spammers out there that join forums all over the world, most of the time they have no clue, it's a forum that has visitors, so they get paid to spam the forum.
The join and post photos of nudes, including the illegal type - I hope I don't have to explain THAT one - and all sorts of other stuff.
So the RULES that no one reads state you need a minimum number of posts - need to be here a while so people can see you actually know what a car is and have heard of AMC first.
It's not a weird rule at all - in fact, most of our rules were stolen from other similar forums!
I'm a member of other forums that have that rule - and even more strict.
I guess  some including the young, are just used to fakebook and tweeterdumb where you can post anything, real or not.
