This is my first post to the AMC Forum so I hope that I can get this right the first time. I have been working on & off on my 1970 AMX for the last nine years. It started with a broken piston on the chassis dyno at UTI April Fools Day, 2000 at our very first Cactus Cruisers Regional AMO Show. It took almost four years to build my motor and once done, looked to good to be re-install back in a flithy engine compartment. The next rational was that if I was going to repaint the engine compartment then I might as well rebuilt the front suspension. Next thing I new I had Brian Heitkam who owns Arizona Autocrafters looking the car over to install some patch panels behind each rear wheel well and repaint the car which still wore its original factory paint. In order to get the best paint job for what I could afford I spent the time to strip most everything off of the car to a basic rolling body. After all the body and paint work was completed I started to rebuild and refinish the rear and front suspension and clean and paint the underside of the unibody. Things are going back together but very slowly. Having other AMC to work on dosen't help the availablity of extra time and there has been a 1970 Mark Donohue Javelin, a 1969 Javelin SST, a 1972 Javelin SST, a 1971 SC360 Hornet and as of late our Cactus Cruisers AMC project 1975 Hornet Sportabout consuming most of my extra time since damaging my engine. The 71 SC360 is a keeper and I will start a seperate post for this project. The other cars except the Sportabout and SC360 are already gone and hopefully the sportabout will be completed and gone before The AMO National Convention. I hope to post a lot of my pictures since I took a lot of them as I was disassembling the car. I wanted to have a good record of how things were built from the factory since I started with a pretty original car. Pictures posted on following post.

Kirk, I am with you man, outside of tinkering in HS I had never rebuilt a classic car.  I was on the fast-track though.  I completed (well what I mean is I got it running) it in a year.  I didn't have a budget as I had no expectations, except that I never imagined how deep it would take me.  Take one thing off an you have six other things to do.  Well 40k later its worthy of bragging about, its not perfect in my mind, but I have said it before its my demon.  I am sure many take a part off paint it put it back on and realize, darn I chipped the bolt or scratched the oil pan, even when I put my headers back on, after having paid 400 to have them ceramic coated I put a scratch on them while installing. Let me tell you how difficult it is to install headers that are wrapped in towels and tape:)

I wish you luck and cannot wait to see the pics.

Our first club meeting in early spring of 1996 before becoming an AMO Chapter.Gary and Kirk at Speed World before our first AMO Regional Show.It took four years to get the engine together.I had an extra front cross member modified.Headers are Hooker Super Comps that have been modified and Jethot coated.Full 1.7:1 ratio rockers under stock valve covers after taking .080 off of the bottom of the adjuster nuts, many oil mods completed.Took lots of pictures of engine compartment. Factory painted shadow mask over brake lines and fittings.Nice factory quality.Battery Acid caused a few holes that were repaired.Engine Compartment before media blasting.

17tamx, do you have more pictures of that white AMX with the black shadow mask? It looks like a great paint scheme.

My 1970 AMX was Hiallea Yellow with the Shadow Mask, paint code 58A-8. I have had the car repainted Big Bad Green with the Shadow Mask since this is the way I would have bought the car new if I had been old enough at the time. I have had the car since June of 1994 and drag raced it for five years before I broke the motor. I have the original Window Sticker, Build Sheet, Owners Manual and Warranty Card. This car is a keeper till I die. I have added Tilt and AM/FM Radio, built the engine and will be running a 2.64 wide ratio trans with the factory 3.54 limited slip. My Machine Wheels were istalled at the factory and are on both the Build Sheet and the Window Sticker. Some may not like that I have changed the color to BBG but I have not changed the door tags. I am the one paying for it so I get to do what I want. When I die my family can fight over the car. Here are some more pictures.

Car had a little rust behind each rear wheel, trunk dropoffs were in pretty good shape.

No real dents, mostly door dings, RT FT fender extension had a hole in the pot metal.

After patch panels were butt welded in.

The only other rust was a small hole at the floor seam under the passenger seat. Under side must have scrapped a rock because there was a dent at that corner facing the driveshaft. Easy and clean repair.

Brian did a great job masking the factory door tag and sticker.

What the car looked like before the color sanding really got started. Paint turned out very nice.

What it looked like going back together before the removal of the rear suspension and the front suspension. Since this picture I have cleaned and painted the underside of the uni-body while on my back. No two post lift yet.

The Trunk and rear of the car was completed pretty quickly. The front end has been taking a lot longer.

It takes a lot of hours to glassbead all the parts and then paint them all with POR 15. I have almost all the parts already painted with all new bushings, bearing, seals, ball joints, tie rod ends, rotors and calipers. I sell to NAPA as a Manufactures Sales Rep so I get a great price at NAPA. I have been using all new items were possible. This car will be a driver for me so it is being done to last the rest of my lifetime.

I know that I have the shocks in front of the axle instead of behind it but I wanted the extra clearance for the larger than stock exhaust pipes that I am going to run.

That is POR 15 over the top of the factory sound deadner and dealer installed undercoating. I wanted to protect the car since I would like to return to the Seattle area were I grew up.

Wheels are not restored, just rattle can freshened up. The trim rings have a few dings from careless tire shops but nothing major. When the TA's were new Discount Tire didn't tighten up my center caps and one came off while my wife was driving the car to one of our shows. I made Discount Tire replace the cap, they found two so they paid for one and I paid for one.

Re-cleaned and re-painted eng compartment after the front suspenion was removed. Body shop sprayed down from above and I sprayed up from below. I cleaned and painted the backside of the front fenders as well.

I hope that I never have to remove the parking brake assembly. I should have removed it before painting it but it was late in the afternoon on a Sunday and I had to come in for dinner. This was the last area that I had to paint on the underside of the car.

Satin Black instead of Flat Black. Easier to clean. Hood springs are hard to paint.

Seats are already done. New crash pad on dash, Inst. panel already restored as well as clock and  AM/FM radio. I have bought lots of parts from Doug Galvin, Jeff Kennedy, Larry Mitchell and Eddie Stakes. I believe in sharing the wealth to all our good AMC Vendors regardless of their political beliefs. Live and let live! Time to go to bed.

It is hiellia yellow with the shadow mask but looks white in the picture. I knew of one in Alaska that was a 1970 AMX 360 go pack auto that was white with the shadow mask and red interior. It was parked in front of a body shop when I saw it so I turnned around and went in to find the owner. The body shop that painted it also did the back of the car in a shadow mask and then painted it with pearl clear. The flat black looked purple. Very cool car. The body shop owner's wife owned the car when they got married. I don't remember their names but she use to work at the AMC dealer in Fairbanks, Alaska.

My brother Mark and I were trying to get an AMC club going in the Phoenix area. There had been one before but it fell apart because of normal chapter politics. We would go to cruise nights and we would meet people who had other AMC cars. It took a few months but we got it going. Once Gary Zinman and John Ellie got involved we switched from Larry Mitchells group to AMO and we have been going ever sense. Ed Winkler ownes the 1968, original owner to this day. I have the 1970 and Mark owned the 1969 BBG. It is currently owned by Mark's friend Chris.

Kirk,

All I can say is that as nice as the car looks in the pictures, it is even better in person. So let's place a bet on whether you'll get your car finished first or I will get my SC/Rambler keeper finished first!

And thanks for referring me to your post.  The alternator bracket is indeed painted engine color although I cheated with my 68 AMX and did it in the satin black combo because I like the offset black against the EN66 engine paint combo better just like you like the BBG and black shadow mask better on your car.

I have

I have been making some progress on my 70 AMX since the Club Project 75 Hornet Sportabout departed to its new home with Gary & Elda Zinman. I have rebuilt one of my 2.64 first gear T-10’s. I did this over the Labor Day weekend. It took two weekends to disassemble and clean all the parts and one weekend to put it all back together after the rebuilt kit and parts arrived. I had a dummy shaft made so it was pretty easy to get all 80 needle bearings installed for the cluster gear. I took about three hours to assemble.

All ready to go back together into the bell housing. I glass beaded and resurfaced the flywheel, Installed a new pilot bushing and installed a new Dual Fiction Center force II Clutch kit. I also installed a new Power Master mini starter and a new clutch bearing release fork. I have been replacing most every wear item on my car since the start of this project. In April it will be ten years since this project was started.  It was at our very first Cactus Classic Car Show that I broke my motor on the dyno at UTI.

Now it was time to install the engine and tranny assembly into the car. I rolled the AMX out of the garage and set-up the cherry picker. Once things were in position the body was lowered over the top of the front and rear cross members and the nuts and bolts were installed.

Once the car was back in the garage it was time to start installing the front suspension back on to the front cross member. It took several weekends to get everything installed. I installed the springs with the help of Bob Green’s spring compressor. Then I installed the spring perches, control arm strut rod brackets and rods. Every item is either new or glass beaded and painted. I have been using a lot of clear to protect the natural finishes.

All new 71 Kelsey Hayes Vented Brake Rotors and NAPA rebuilt calipers. I have bought a lot of NAPA parts for the car. Upper & Lower Ball joints, Inner and outer tie rod ends, pitman and idler arms, bearings and seals. What I didn’t buy from NAPA I bought from Doug Galvin AMC or off of E-Bay.

My painting area and drying rack that I have been using all these years. The front of my garage faces due West so the driveway is the best place to paint and dry items in the afternoon sun. I have found that plastic butter containers work great for holding screws and bolts for glass bead blasting and painting. Once I had the front and rear brakes and suspension looking good it pained me to know that the backside of my Machine Wheels that were filthy would be touching them. So I spent a little time yesterday and wire brushed and cleaned the backside of my wheels. I had repainted the front of my wheels last year so it was time to take care of the backside. It took about 3 hours to do the four wheels. Wednesday night I worked on the 71 center caps and retainers that I picked up from Bob Green. He now has my original 70 caps.

Here are some of the items I used to clean up the backside of my Machine Wheels. The piece of cardboard with the curve cut into it was used to edge the wheel to keep from painting the tire.

Now that I was able to re-install my Wheels and tires I feel that I am making some progress. I know that I still have a long way to go before I can drive the car again but at lest I can see that the end is getting closer. I still have a couple items on order that I am waiting on and I still have to get my old door panels sent off to Legendary so they can be redone. Now it is just a matter of time and money. Hopefully I will have it together in time for the April Show.

I can't wait to drive it again!

Wow! Kirk the car looks great Thumbs Up. You do very nice work and fast too as most of the other guys I have talked to are like me and well over the 10 year mark on their 70`s. Good luck and I can`t wait to see the pics of it all finished.
