Mustang Production:

1964      121,538
1965      559,451
1966     607,568
1967     472,121
1968     317,404
1969      299,824
1970      190,727

AMX production:
1968        6,725
1969        8,293
1970        4,116

Add in Javelins and you'll be close to 1/2 of the 65 mustang production numbers. I don't know what the interchange is on Mustang sending units, but the economy of scale created by the number of cars on the road justifies the price difference.
1971 Gremlin 258
1971 Hornet SC/360
1979 AMX 304

The good news is you don't have to drop the tank to change it.
I seriously doubt that you can repair it without dropping the tank, especially on an AMX

I replaced the sending unit in my 69 AMX without dropping the tank.  It wasn't easy, but I did it.

You must have a hole in your trunk floor? Confused
