Ok guys. I'm working on a 1968 Rebel 550 Wagon. It has a 232 with a single barrel Holley 1931 carb, 3 speed on the tree. Recently had a fresh tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, air/fuel filters, and a new fuel pump). After all this it still had a dead spot in it. When it sits at idle in nuetral, I can pin the throttle and it will kill itself 90% of the time. If I ease into it it does just fine. When taking off from a stop it will sputter for a second and then take off. Other than this it runs just fine. So I had the Carb rebuilt....same issue. Someone pointed out that the accelerator cam isn't hitting in the right spot so I'll start with this picture. Does this look right?
This picture is taken with the throttle all the way closed. Does it look ok? Any other ideas of what is going on? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

whats the tsm say about adjustment you migh try bending the linkage alittle to get it engaged sooner or try adjusting the mixture screw. is the float set right a little low will give issues try setting it higher look down the carb see what the squirter is doing and go from there

I don't have a TSM yet. The fuel doesn't squirt from the accelerator pump until almost half throttle. There are 3 holes for the linkage to the cam to go in, I have it set on the one that moves it the most, the other holes barely move it at all.

Check vacuum lines and intake manifold bolts. Had a 232 with a off idle stumble, found end bolts on manifold loose, tightend, stumble went away and idle improved.

The intake bolts are tight. No vacuum leaks I could find. Even plugged off the pvc system. Still doing it. I'm lost guys.

My 68 Rogue with 232 had same issue. Replaced my Carter 2bbl with a brand new Motorcraft 2150, same issue. Checked accelerator pump, was good. Replaced fuel pump, filter, new Pertronix, new coil, still stumbled. Checked for vacuum leaks, checked torque on manifold bolts and carb to manifold bolts/gasket, still no joy. Only thing left appears to be distributor. Suspicious that it's not throwing in mechanical advance correctly, as if the advance weights are maybe sticking or not moving freely. Hard to check in the car, as with no load the engine spins up quickly and all appears to be OK when checking timing. I have a new HEI distributor that I plan to put in, will let you know if that clears up my issue. For you, I'd say you may want to pull apart your distributor and make sure that your mechanical advance is not gummed up and moving freely.

Update, finally success. Putting in the HEI with light advance springs helped, but still some hesitation. Went to the longest accelerator pump lever setting on the 2150, and that totally fixed it. Apparently was both short on advance AND over lean at throttle application. Car is now a hoot to drive.

The TSM gives a section on theory on how that Holly carburetor works. It would seem that the information there addresses your problem by giving an explanation on how that carburetor should function.
It is not a hard carburetor to rebuild but by having some one else do it, leaves open the possibility errors could have been made in the re-assembly. There is not a good picture to compare to your pictures so I really can not answer your question, but the theory of operation does address your concerns. A TSM to read for your car or even a Chiltons or MOTORS MANUAL both of which would have covered fairly clearly as to how they operate. This I think would be a good time to have a manual. The adjustment of the accelerator pump is as follows in the manual Install the pump connector link in outer hole (long stroke) of pump arm with ends extending away from the counter=shaft arm. Back out throttle lever set screw until throttle valves seat in bores of carburetor. Be sure fast idle adjusting screw does not hold throttle open. Hold straight edge across top of dust cover boss at pump arm. the flat on top of pump arm should be parallel to strait edge. Adjust by bending throttle connecting rod at upper angle. The actual time the squirt takes place is a balancing act inside the carburetor with check valves or bits and pieces working against a spring inside the carburetor and the vacuum that is generated. So making sure your idle RPM is correct at idle would help in determining that the vacuum is also correct as applied the carburetor. Edited by uncljohn - Mar/20/2017 at 1:31am |
