It would have been a 199 CID or a 232 CID. There are numbers machined on the engine block surface just next to the distributor on the passenger side. Clean that area if the block is dirty. You may need a flashlight. Write the numbers down. They are a code that tells you what kind of engine displacement (cubic inches) and the compression ratio. If the first letter is a J it is a 199. If the first letter is an L it is a 232.
But also buy a technical service manual online for your 68 American. It will show you just about everything about the car. |

I would note where the sump needs to be in the oil pan and measure the overall space available. Then go to a salvage yard and find something that will easily fit and that has the oil sump in the right place.

Look in the Frankenrambler section if you are thinking about using some other brand engine. Post questions there about non-AMC/Jeep engines.
That said, the easiest swap is a Jeep 4.0L from an XJ Cherokee (or a Grand Cherokee.. EFI wiring might be more difficult though). You can keep the EFI (a bit of wiring, but not too bad... but then you are new to this...) or use a carb intake from a 81-90 4.2L. Requires a slight modification to the intake, but just a little filing. The 232 is a 3.8L, the 199 a 3.2L -- for comparison. As noted, you would need a transmission also -- your transmission will only bolt up to 1964-71 sixes. You can use the Jeep auto or five speed without too much work. OD gears would only be useful at high speeds (like 70+) unless you go to a lower geared rear axle, but that's about all. |

Where are you located? Your profile says LV. Is that the country or the city in Nevada? |
