Turn to page 11 for my latest update.
30 days ago I was alerted to an out of focus photo that was posted online and showed something is as elusive to a AMC historians as the mythical Sasquatch. The 1967 Rogue V8 convertible with factory 4 Speed. Having captured and nurtured another one of these rarities over the last 10 years, I knew for a fact that they really did exist in limited numbers. Close to 50 years after their creation these little known drop top baby brother to the SC/Rambler were thought to be extinct. The fable of this particular being was that it was built in Kenosha, it was sold in Florida in May of 1967. Once purchased the car was almost immediately driven cross country from Florida to Oregon, spending its entire life in Corvallis Oregon. The original owners kept the Rogue for the next 12 years and the Rambler was often seen around town with its proud owners. When the Rogue was about 12 it was purchased by a new owner, Larry. Larry and the Rogue did everything together for the next 6 years. Larry started to repaint the car but ended up only adding a camouflage of Primer and removed all the shiney trim. Soon Larry and the Rogue grew apart and Larry's brother took the Rogue home to live with him. During the time that Larry's brother owned the car it got a little beat up with minor body damage. Soon Larry came to the little Rogue's rescue and once again hid him away from public view in his garage with other more common beasts known as "Chevrolets". So based on this tale my brother Kirk and I set out on our hunt hoping to photograph or capture this elusive vehicle. We caught up to it in Central Oregon and were able to reign it into captivity. We found a 1967 Rogue convertible with 225 hp 290, 4 speed 3:15 open rear end in Barbados Blue with blue split bench front seat, White convertible top and AM radio. With only 68k original miles the car is in desperate need for a cosmetic restoration. The car came with all the trim which was removed prior to the ensuing body damage. A complete history in receipts from day one and even the original window sticker came with the car. Keep an eye out for this restoration with a goal to be completed by years end. This brings up the question of how many of the 921 1967 Rogue convertibles came from the factory with a 290 v8 4 speed combination. In order to have this combination the serial number will start A7KM77 with C or D as the 7th digit Here is the break down A=American Motors 7 =1967 K=Kenosha built M= Manual 4 speed 77= Rogue Convertible C= 290 2 bbl carb 200 HP or D= 290 4 bbl Carb 225 HP We believe only about 20% of the 1967 Rogue convertibles came with the 290 V8 and only 20% of those with the 4 Speed. This would mean less than 40 would have been made and how many of those were ordered with the 225 HP 290 CI V8 as this is the only one I know of? How many of these still exist today? As a Note it has been reported that AMC built 7 1967 Rogue convertibles with 343 and 4 speed. I have done exhaustive research on this and believe this was "Made up" for a magazine article back in the 80's as neither a car or documentation has ever surfaced regarding these cars. My two brothers Kirk, Ken, and I now have 5 1967 V8 Rogue Convertibles in the family and my two are both four speeds. We have an additional 3 V8 Rogue hard tops from 1966 to 1969. We will soon be resurrecting the Rogue Registry and will try to determine build numbers and additional data about 1965 thru 1969 Rogues. Mark Fletcher Edited by azfletch - Dec/18/2014 at 6:24pm |

I thought maybe it was that car on the Spokane craigslist that looks like the brochure convertible. But that car is a 232 /auto I think. Joe

Mark,
I got a call on Friday from a local (30 miles away), from gentlemen (older by phone voice), that he was working on a 1969 Rogue, 343, 4V "stick" car.......He was wanting a fuel pump and the Local NAPA sent him my way, he talked about 5 or six collector cars of Brand X, had me confused what he had, but I asked him fo the VIN to figureit out. He is supposed to stop by my place next Friday...I'll let you know, this is a one horse town and i have never seen a Rogue here before, and most AMC's that are here I "imported".

Nice find! Rogues only or will you include Americans as well? I thought Rogues were introduced part way through the 1966 model year as a sporty trim package for Americans at the same time the V8 was introduced (despite the fact that you could order a Rogue with a 232)? I understand why you hunt these cars down, I absolutely love mine and the only thing I wish was different would be a T-10 (or even T-5) transmission. |

The Rogue name was first used in 1965 by the Oregon AMC dealers on White with Black top 440 hardtop special additions. All were 232 Autos. I have photos of a survivor I will share in the registry once it is revived.
