1966 American fuel filter

   Silly question but I just bought a 1966 Rambler American with a 232 inline six engine. The car had been stored in a barn for 5 years. The car runs and drives like a new car but after running about a tank of fuel thru it, it has started to have what I call a fuel issue. The car starts and idols fine but when in gear at a stop and when I give it a quick shot of fuel it stalls. I want to first start with the fuel filter and I am aware of the screen that is located on the left side of the carter carburetor. I’ve check that screen and it looks very clean. Does anyone know if there is another filter that may be in the tank? I see to inline filter from the back to the front.

	If it has the original style fuel pump, it's probably in the metal 'bowl' that held by a little wire bale with a bolt on top. That's a cartridge filter you can still buy, and it comes with a new rubber gasket. If it's been sitting that long, the best solution would be to drop and clean the tank, because there is probably sediment and rust that will keep getting sucked into the fuel line. There's a 'sock' filter on the fuel pick up in the tank.

	If it's been sitting in a barn for 5 years there's going to be a lot of gummed up deposits in the tank and fuel line. Just draining the tank, and line doesn't get rid of it all, by a long shot. I done this myself once. Added fresh fuel and the car ran fine at first, then a few days later, after the fresh fuel had time to soften the deposits, everything plugged up so solid I couldn't even get a coat hanger wire through the flexible hose at the gas tank. Adding fresh fuel to it just softens the deposits and reflows them into you fuel line, stops up the filters, some usually gets by the filter and gummes up the passages in the carb too. Stock, your 66 also has a fuel filter on the bottom of fuel pump, if it is like mine. And someone might have added a inline filter too. About the only way to really get rid of those deposits is to drop the tank, take out the sending unit, and clean it. You'll probably be surprised at the mess inside. Also blow out the fuel lines with compressed air thoroughly.

	Yes I believe it is the original fuel pump. So basically what you are saying it there are technically 3 filters for the fuel? A sock in the tank, a filter in the fuel pump, and a screen strainer on the left side of the Carter carburetor?

	awesome!! I’ll give that a try. There is only 1 fuel filter listed for that car and I wasn’t sure where it was located. I was almost sure it was at the bottom of the pump but wasn’t 100% certain. Thanks again

	old gas is bad gas. it's harmful to run it in any engine. it's best disposed of at a recycling center.

	The fuel filter on the pump is a NAPA 3038 or equivalent.
	Past AMC's 1974 Hornet X (new) 1975 Gremlin X (new) 1964 Classic 660 Cross Country 1965 American 440-H

	anybody know where to get the spring that holds the fuel filter in? Mine is gone.
