Same question, different owner! Just bought my son a 64 440 hardtop and wondering what AMC V-8 would fit without major modifications. Also it is an automatic and wants to retain it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I know from a radiator replacement on my 63 (different body style) that there is virtually no margin of error in the length of the engine or depth of the radiator. The fan is right up on the radiator.

Welcome.

There's a ton of information on this in the forum - do an advanced search for it (V8 swaps should bring up a bunch). It should give you a starting point.

64-69 I believe are the same chassis which means you can install a gen 2/3 engine using the later mounts/front subframe.

If I might add that when info is found and research done a mod can put it as a sticky so common engine swaps etc can be accessed easily with common questions answered.

Bulltear makes an AMC V-8 to 6 cylinder engine mount for cars with 199, 232,and 258 engines but not for the 196. This uses the existing crossmember, no need to swap a V-8 crossmember into your car.

Uh, don't the bulltear mounts go between the 65-69 199-232 crossmember mountbrackets, which a 64 will not have on its crossmember?

A 65 or newer small car engine crossmember will bolt in which takes care of the 196 crossmember being different.

As far as 64-69 being all the same, they're similar but there are many, many differences. The most obvious change is that the engine compartment was lengthened in 1966. Putting a V8 in shouldn't be a problem. V8's are shorter than the sixes and the engine bay is wide enough.

Timo4563 - the existing automatic will not work with a V8. Best bet for a V8 swap is to go with a 72 or later V8. AMC switched to Chrysler transmissions for th 1972 model year. There is nothing really wrong with the Borg Warner trannies but the Chrysler ones are less expensive to rebuild and easier to get parts for.

I bought the Bulltear mounts for my 1965 Amer wagon that had an OHV 195.Had to send them back. They will only work with a crossmember from the 232 ci engine. And if you're going to drive the car on roads the Bulltear mounts mount solid to the crossmember and engine, and with a poly bushing in the middle.Good recipe for dental visits to have fillings replaced.

Bulltear mounts will NOT work on a 196 CM.............only on the 199/232/258 CM.......V8 CM out of an American, Gremlin,Spirit,Hornet, and Concord will work as well. Years the V8 CM's are 1966-79.
