Good news!
The engine shop says the original block is good to rebuild. I ordered the NOS cylinder head on ebay after talking to the seller. He said the owner of Kennedy American confirmed it is a head for the aluminum block 196. I've cleaned up the engine bay and all of the accessories I removed from the engine. The distributor was tested and is good to go. Clutch has been rebuilt and is read to pick up. The only left to do is get the water pump rebuilt and go through the braking system. I'll get new tires after I get the car running. So, looks like another 3-4 weeks and I'm going to get this all original car back on the road after 25 years.

Bad news! The NOS cylinder head I ordered off eBay has lots of cracks. The seller described it as NOS. I have a call into the seller now to request a refund. Now I am on the hunt again for a head for my 196 aluminum block.

I think you are back to what Farna wrote. Find a 1971 or earlier 199 or 232 and it will bolt to your transmission. It looks a lot more at home in the space than the old shorty. If you can find one with a bell housing even better, you won't have to play with the starter mounting.
I just pulled my 196 and put the 232 back in. The car won't see another 196 as long as I own it. |

I'm more stubborn than most. I'm not ready to throw in the towel. Since I know the block is good I'm going to keep the car original with an aluminum block 196.

Good luck to you.
I will keep my eyes and ears open for the availability of an aluminum block head in the Alberta area. |

Good luck on getting your refund from e-bay and finding an AL head. Obviously if the head is cracked it's not NOS, so hopefully you won't have a problem. You should get a refund on all but shipping. With the shop invoice supporting the cracks this SHOULD be no problem, and the seller probably won't make you ship it back.... but might!

Refund, minus shipping, came through yesterday. I've got a lead on a possible cylinder head locally. I'll know more later this week. In the meantime, if anyone knows of a good one out there, let me know.
