I bought a 63 Rambler American with a B/W auto trans . I thought it was a old 2 speed type trans as it only shifted once in drive . Low to high gear . Shifting was fine and no slipping . Later found out it was a 3 speed .  Decided to find out what the problems was . Linkage was fine , so dropped the pan and it was very clean with little or no junk on the bottom . Fluid was also unburnt and red . Cleaned out the valve body also pretty clean but the front servo had not been adjusted at all . The bolt was back all the way out so just the arm was touching the servo . Adjusted the bolt as the manual stated and put it all back together . Filled it with new F type fluid and put it in reverse and off we went . It shifted in to 3 gear for the first time since I owned it ! Both D1 and D2 worked now ! came home and let it set awhile . Then went to go out for another drive and now no reverse . First drive it worked just as it always did , no slips and a firm engage . Now it goes in gear but you can hear the pump or convert going and a slight engagement but not enough to move it backwards . Pop it in drive and it goes right in gear . push it out of the driveway and all front gears still work fine . The car will roll just slightly forward in the driveway in neutral , drop it into reverse and it will stop moving but not go backwards . The more RPMs you give it seams to make it work even less .  Any ideas ? Stuck valve ?  Something shot now after driving in 2 gear all this time ? Always kept it around 45 mph around town and no highway driving . Thank you for any ideas

ALL AMC transmissions use Type A/Dexron ATF from the factory.

Did you adjust the rear servo? Rear servo is used in reverse and manual low. You were never driving around is 2nd. all the time . It was starting out in 2nd. then shifting into 3rd.

The owner's manuals, along with the shop manuals for Ramblers equipped with Borg Warner automatic transmissions, specify type "A" transmission fluid, the modern equivalent of which is Dextron.

I've owned 8 Ramblers built from 1960 to 1969 and I used Dextron in every one of them with excellent results.

i had a '65 air-cooled aluminum cased Borg Warner auto in a 63 classic with a 232. i ran the best quality Dexron (Dexron II). drove it 21 years, two full rebuilds, i personally drove 350,000 miles on it. i changed fluid every 2 - 5 years, i don't care what conventional wisdom is there, when i had bands adjusted. i figured maintenance is cheaper than ruined trips. it never failed, i always had plenty of notice of rebuilds ("its running out of band adjustment") and a slight delay going into gear when cold. keep the throttle cable adjusted by the TSM.

the first transmission expert i had work on that thing said that the modern chemicals today are so superior to the old stuff there's no contest. Dexron is the way to go today.

One that I took apart had a broken adjuster bolt on the front servo. From all the slack to the piston it had cocked sideways and the o-ring had blown out. I would check the servos if you can but I don't remember how accessible they are or what you have to do to get at them.
