I got the oilpan all unbolted, but it won't drop without hitting the steering in the front.

Is there a trick to drop it without removing that bar or does it have to come off?
Edit: looks like it has to come off. I've never done it before, how is it done?

why are you dropping the pan? just a cleanout? if you start poking around in there, ... lol.

I figured that I would clean it and check it out in there while I had other parts off the engine. I'll have to be careful not to get carried away in there!

I got the pan off and pulled out the pistons, and here's what I found:

Left is #1 piston, right is #4, which I noticed also had a chip out of the top once the head came off. No wonder there was no compression. I noticed that both of these were very rough on top, all the other pistons were fine on the sides and mostly smooth on top.

That could be due to pretty extreme detonation (AKA spark knock).  Some previous owner was probably not paying attention to proper timing or how the engine sounded when running.   Buy the way I have a low time used set of .040 oversize pistons, cheap , if you need them.  Joe

How far off would the timing have to be to cause detonation this bad? I wonder why it's only on two pistons.

Thanks for the piston offer, but I already ordered some pistons on ebay.

A lot of things influence detonation, including fuel mixture (which varies from cylinder to cylinder) and deposits of carbon on the piston tops, which of course might be different on different cylinders.  Joe

yowza! i've never seen anything like that. detonation usually eats the top off. what eats the sides?!

i know it's not, but it looks like localized electrochemical corrosion. freaky weird.

it seems unlikely that the cylinder walls could survive unscathed.

I bought some NOS hastings piston rings and the second rings come with this hexagonal metal band in the package. What's it's purpose? I wanted to check before I install them.

I've never seen pistons like that either! I've burned a hole in one due to a lean condition (dual carbs on a six -- rear carb main jet got trash in it, couldn't tell until it holed the leanest piston, #6!). It almost looks like they were leaned out and burned, but only those two? The two ends starve first, so #1 I can understand, but no way a center piston was leaned out and burned! Must have been detonation hammering the pistons, then burning down the sides where a bit of top ring land broke off.
