have you tried adjusting the valves yet. If not I’d try that and see if that helps. Ran into an idle issue on a previous rambler with 196 and valves lashes we’re out of spec, readjusted them and surprisingly ran smooth.

another thing too as mentioned bad gas as well as if the other spark plugs look the same. Carburetor might need some adjusting but still that one cylinder with the spark plug not hooked up and made no change in sound I’d definitely do a compression test on it

I cleaned out the gas tank and it's got new oil in it, and I rebuilt the carb but haven't tuned it much yet.

I'll check the valves when I do the compression test later.

THIS. If the valves are too tight, it will run like crap. A well adjusted 196 will sound a bit like a sewing machine. Try loosening the rockers on that cylinder just a bit.

Ok. I'll run a compression test before and after adjusting the valves to see if it changes. There's a good chance these valves have never been touched.

I did a compression test and here's what I found

Dry: Cylinders 2-5 were at or above 140 PSI, Cylinder 1 was around 5-10 PSI
With Oil: Cylinder 1, no difference

I checked the valves and adjusted them to the recommended spec with feeler gauges (I did it cold)

After adjusting valves, cylinder 1 was still in the single digits for compression.

So cylinder 1 is effectively dead. If the valves are moving as they should you have a serious problem.  Time to pull the head.

Ok, I guess I have a project for the rest of the weekend then. Once I get it off I'll check out the head gasket and valves. Should I get a new head gasket even if the old one looks fine?

Quick question: If there is a problem with the cylinder head, there's someone on Craigslist selling a rebuilt OHV head from a 1957 rambler - will the 57 head fit the 63 block or are there differences?

Never reuse a head gasket. Just replace. It should bolt right up.
